DS4 button remapping
So, I know others have had an issue with this before in the past, but whenever I plug in my DS4 controller to play, everything seems to work fine except for my X and Square buttons. Square is assigned to Confirm, and X is assigned to Cancel. I have tried SEVERAL different 3rd party programs (x360ce, DS4Windows, InputMapper, and some others). But, whenever I use these programs, it actually makes things worse, because then the game doesn't even see I have a controller plugged in, and I can't even use my DS4 at that point, with or without Exclusive Mode (or Hide DS4 Controller option) activated.

So, is there any other solution? It's seriously frustrating to always have to remember to hit Square to accept, and even worse to remember to hit X to cancel.

DS4 is not supported under Windows, thats why you are getting weird input without any 3rd party programs. Sony sells a DS4 dongle adapter with Windows support since recently though.

Since Steam since recently does that thing too, maybe it is a problem with Steam, go into Big Picture, then go to controller settings and register the DS4 controller there

And make sure you are using wired connection, to exclude the possibility of you having Win10 anniversary version, and the corresponding bluetooth problems

Alright, I'll try the Big Picture controller settings, and if that doesn't work, then I look into that Dongle. I always use a wired connection for my DS4, and it usually works for other games, and when it doesn't, usually x360ce or DS4Windows works. Anyways, thanks for the help :)

Sadly i can't find the link anymore, but here is a second best find. Basically all the dongle does is proper DirectInput output to prevent button mixup, the game still have to support DI, so the dongle won't magically solve everything in every game. Anyhow i have DS4 and played this game through with it, using InputMapper, Steam, wired, wireless in any combination of the above, so there is definitely a way. Consider doing some generic troubleshoting, like disconnecting any exotic devices here a guy doesn't get any audio in ff13-2 because he is using some weird external usb sound card. Ensure the controller is the only gamepad device connected, if there are 20 connected it confuses not only people but also games too. and of course the laterst version of InputMapper or the corresponding other emulator app. Not quite sure about the settings because i haven't touched them in a year, but i looked it up now and i have exclusive mode ON. And there aren't any other settings, it just works lol.

Assuming BigPicture doesn't work, it did for me, they sure hid it well though, never would i have thought to go there to set up the controller for normal gameplay.

Yeah, Big Picture settings didn't work, just made the game not be able to see my controller again. The only USB plugs I have in are my external harddrive, and microphone, so not sure how those could interfere, but I can look around

well you can check if they work in general, Inputmapper makes the touchpad act like the mouse, and Steam makes the right joystick act like the mouse in Windows. If it isn't working in Windows then they aren't doing what they are supposed to do. If it does work, then i don't know :|

the prgrams work by themselves, even with some other games. It's just FFXIII that's not seeing it

So, I looked more into the Big Picture settings, and actually managed to configure the button layout to emulate the keyboard buttons, and that seemed to fix my initial problem... But, now there's a new problem. My camera seems to always be trying to look upwards. This is even without any controllers plug in, like when I play with just K&M, it's always looking upwards. What's going on now???

scratch that, turns out I had to disable a controller driver (vJoy, I believe it was) that was making the camera all funky. Everything works great now, thanks for the help! :D

Yeah... After so many years I guess there's still as many problems and solutions. I'm in the same boat.
I tried using DS4Windows, found that Square and Cross were swapped. Tried to change those from DS4Windows, it was forcibly re-mapped again.

I tried the new DS4W (as opposed to the old abandoned one). I tried "hide DS4 controller". One guide said "connect to ds4 exclusively", which apparently is no longer in the program.
Somewhere along the way my PC (steam/DS4W) stopped detecting the controller, both wired and wireless.
I tried the Big Picture thing that I read here. Game doesn't detect the controller.

I'm gonna try yet another 3rd party software, I guess, Input Mapper, which some people say is the same thing as DS4W but "new version".

This thead is 3 years old and pretty much everything written here is outdated, inhcluding the guides. There is no need for 3rd party programs anymore Steam does the same thing, including remapping. 3rd party programs will only lead to conflicts and it is best to not have them running.

DS4W has become superier to Inputmapper, the latter i think got some serious problems.

Have DS4W installed for all the non steam games, and Steam handles the rest and uninstall all the funky 3rd party programs with a driver or something.

Except Steam did NOT work anyway. The reason I downloaded DS4 in the first place was because FFXIII was NOT detecting my controller.
Syad Aug 25, 2020 @ 7:54am
Steam does the detecting. If it can't find anything there is some general problem and i suggest looking for troubleshooting guides like this[boilingsteam.com], this etc etc

Well, thank you for your answers. Making it "Force off" did absolutely nothing, but for whatever reason after putting it BACK to the default option it detected the controller. Only wired, tho, not wireless. But hey, it's working, so I'll take it.

This is entirely normal; There is an option under Steam's controller management to swap O and X. In Japan, O is used to confirm or select, and X to cancel. In other parts, like America, it's the opposite. The Nintendo Joycon Pro is the same way. Steam's wrapper handles both cases. All controllers more or less work with Steam, and thus, with FFXIII. No 3rd party wrappers required (or even desirable). If you're having issues, use Big Picture mode and I believe you can still make a custom mapping. The game doesn't support remaps, but Steam's controller support is useful for many contingencies.

I know about O and X. The problem was it swapped SQUARE and cross. Not circle. Actually, scracth that, cause then X would be the map.
Square was Cross (accept), but Cross was Circle (cancel), so I've no clue what was map and what was menu. Regardless, it's mostly solved. Only works plugged AND in big picture, but it works, so yeah.
