So let's take Vanille for example, she is a Ravager, Medic and Saboteur. Fill out every possible node that you can in all three clases, the other three classes don't matter much. Just make certain you do this BEFORE you are able to expand again that way you will be fully levelled by the last fight, or any other boss fight for that matter.
Now this will mean going back to fight monsters, therefore there will be some grinding from that perspective. But it makes the game a LOT easier.
You expand your Crystarium as the story progresses.
Stage 1: Beginning of Chapter 3
Stage 2 : End of Chapter 3
Stage 3: Defeat the Dreadnaught in the middle of Chapter 4
Stage 4: End of Chapter 5
Stage 5: End of Chapter 6
Stage 6: End of Chapter 7
Stage 7: End of Chapter 9
Stage 8: End of Chapter 10
Stage 9: End of Chapter 11
Stage 10: Finish the game.
That's right. You get the final Crystarium expansion AFTER you finish the game.
However you should get each character's special attack during stage 9.
A good example of a special attack is Vanille's Death ability which she gets as a Saboteur. This is by far the most powerful attack that any character has in the game. However the AI will never use it, so you will have to control her yourself.
It really benefits from a high stagger too. If you manage to get up around 900% stagger on an enemy, the Death spell can do close to 100k of damage. Moreover you might be able to trigger it two or three times per stagger at that level. Just get them staggering, and keep the stagger level climbing until you reach around 900%, and let Death fly.
Death also has a small chance of killing any enemy outright, but that is around 0.01% or so. As a result I would count on in never happening, just use it for the raw damage. Also, since it is a magic attack, deshelling the enemy helps even more.
Finally I wouldn't worry too much about mining Crystarium until around stage 5-6. At that time you should really be investing time into hunting monsters to build it up.
Oh, and more piece of advice for the final battle. You will probably need Hope because he is a fantastic Synergist. If you want use Death you will need Vanille as well. So you have your buffer, and debuffer/heavy hitter. However they are both a bit squishy so you will need a meat shield. Fang and Snow are both good at that.
Sorry for the wall of text. But I hope you found this useful.
I choose Lightning as leader, then theres Vanille and Hope..
Heres the formation
Bully |Commando|Sabateour|Synergist
Relentless Assault : Comando|Ravager|Ravager
Salvation |Medic|Medic|Medic|
Tri-disaster
Variety
Coordination
I dont use Tri-disaster, variety, and Coordination that much.. the only thing i focus was Bully, Relentless, and Salvation...
I use Salvation to restore all of our party's health, then use Bully to increase my party's strenght and weaken the boss... Then, I use Relentless Assault to attack the enemy after my party is strong enough and after the boss is weaken anough..
Sorry my english is bad.. I hope u get the point...
Of course I would recommend coming back to Gran Pulse to level up a little but that depends how bad it is.
I am definitly not an expert when it comes to FFXIII but You might check this video how I beat final boss.
