Dying
I'm trying to get into this game, but all I'm seeing is bad mechanics and terrible controls.

I just died a few times, mainly because every action in this game has massive delay to it combined with enemies being able to stunlock you with ease. The first couple of times I died it gave me the option to load a save. I then died again and I woke up on the ground and money was taken from me. What caused this? Why are there different outcomes when you die, that you can't control. And why in a game that has 509230582304839030 tutorials popping up on the screen at nearly all times does it not explain why various deaths have different outcomes?

When you die to a drowner you "die" and have to reload. There is no way you died to a drowner and woke up with no money because thats not how the game works.

I don't think you died in that case; rather you were knocked out.

He didn't say anything about drowners, specifically.

you can change difficulty so enemy does less damage and has less health if you struggle with game.

also there is nice perk doge witch allows to ignore 100% damage when rolling around.

there is few enemy that can stun you , I think only the water guy throwing mud can , the rest not really , unless you walk into screams.

the delay could be from RT on which adds ms latency or frame gen which again adds more latency.

turning it off you should be around 20-30 ms max

you can also try changing dx 11 or dx12

Here is your answer @MOSES for the different results of dying in this game
1st case- where u got k i l l e d and loaded the recent save game becuz you were attacked by monsters.
2nd case- u got k i l l e d and ur money got taken, this happened because u were knocked out by the guards becuz u did something wrong in front of them (like k i l l i n the animals or ther a tning the civilians) and the soluttion to this is to just roll back to the recent save game and staet from there and dont repeat the same mistake again
I hope this helped u, have a great time playing witcher 3 :)

Try dodging using the ALT key instead of rolling, allows you to counter attack more rapidly.

If you're playing on higher difficulties lower it to normal or easy until you get the hang of it.

Losing money is when you get knocked out by humans for breaking the law.

OP, if all your HP was gone, but the "Game Over" screen wasn't shown, then you were just knocked out, not killed. If some of your money was gone, then you probably lost a fist-fight. The game's pretty good about letting you know when you died, as the "Game Over" screen appears at pretty much the exact moment Geralt collapses.

It is true that this game's controls are clunky even by 2015 standards but the story and literally every single side quest are so well written that I strongly encourage you to look past the controls and not quit the game. If swordfighting feels crap, try out focusing on signs (aka the griffin build) which essentially lets you spam spells, kill everything fast, while at the same time ignoring Geralt's awkward mobility.

As others have said, when you are seen commiting crimes by armored guards around town they will eventually start fighting you (think of them as GTA police, but with swords and halberds instead of guns). You can either run or fight. If you fight and you loose, you will be knocked out instead of killed, and some of your money will be gone. How much money will be gone seems to be random, sometimes I lost ALL of my money, which were in the tens of thousands.
Guards are triggered by actions like looting their chests, entering some of their private areas, attacking them or other citizens and generally being unruly in their presence. The game does warn you on occasion if you upset them or not, and you will be given a chance to "cut it out, or else!".

I need to play this game again since I barely touched it. I still remember how I was trying to help some guard fight a drowner and one of the guard accidentally hit me on his horse with his spear and this knocked me out and I was wondering why, but before I could understand the drowner jumped me and killed me for real.

Now at least I understand how it could have happened

White Orchard has a little bit of everything, so you learn the basics of the game and decide if you want to continue once you're done with it, before going into the wider world. Take your time, check every nook and cranny and most importantly just take in the vibe.
