i left them on you some times do a "finisher" cut the head off stab them ect.

I turned it off, but for some reason was still lobbing off heads, stabbing, and other finisher moves. If there's some sort of combo to do them, I don't know how I was doing it. I turned it on and... was lobbing of heads, stabbing, and other finisher moves. I haven't noticed a difference so far.

I dont really figured this out yet but maybe this finishing moves system is a bit like darksiders 2. When you enemy has reached X % of health you can perform a finisher or just kill him with normal hits. But only speculation xD

Well if it's like an insta-kill at X%, I can see how that would be helpful and how some people would prefer to have it off. I have noticed that the enemies are extraordinarily polite during finishers, though. They politely wait while you decapitate or stab their buddy before resuming their attacks on you. o.0

Chopping off limps I'm pretty sure isn't considered a finisher. Especially because you need adrenaline to do a finisher, and chopping off limbs doesn't take up a adrenaline point. I've done a finisher once with automatic finisher on, and I'm not entirely sure how I did it.

With it off I read somewhere there a prompt over the enemy's head that tells you what button to it and when. I also read somewhere that all you need to do is hold one of the attack buttons down and it happens. I've been experimenting and I can't seem to figure it out.

As far as finishers go, I've found a fairly high chance of hitting them after casting Axii on an enemy in a fight. Usually only human enemies though, and not always.

Discovered it purely by accident when going up against 10 bandits who would have owned me otherwise. Casted Axii, attacked the guy I stunned, I instantly killed him. Proceeded to do this to most of the other bandits there, though didn't work on all of them. Perhaps it has something to do with those 3 little bars underneath your stamina.

Hell if I know. Might just be percentage based like it was in Witcher 2.

Yeah it does. I'll have to try messing around with Axii then.

Well! I think dismemberment and finisher are different. Dismemberment's chance bases on trophies stats (10%). Just kinda low. Hope some modders will increase it to 50-70%

I played the gog version, an i have the same problem.....
i dont know how i do the finisher, i fight on lvl 4 against a lvl 9 bandit leader is cast axii on him an cut him in half without any adrenalin point....
this work on 2 other bandits, and at 3 it dont work.
i some videos i seen it promt a button above the head of the enemy when i can make a finisher but on pc i never seen like this....

with auto, the game does it by default, with off, an x pops up when you can do it. there's essentially no difference anyway, since the x comes up so quickly during the frantic combat that the end result is the same. you do a finisher if you press x, and don't if you press y. same result with both settings.

Ok, well... for those of us playing Witcher 3 on a PC, I'll go ahead and say I've never seen a prompt to click or press any key when auto finishers are off. I've also seen some suggest fast attacks are the only type of attack that has the potential to be a finisher - I don't know why since I've experienced numerous finishers using strong attacks.

In addition, severing limbs may not deplete any adrenaline, but I would have to consider it a ... "mini-finisher"? I only suggest this because the 'slo-mo' a lot of you have mentioned occurs when the Doctor is IN ... and decides amputating is necessary - sometimes both legs, sometimes one arm.

And one last thing regarding Raelyn's discovery:

If you've progressed far enough into the game to fight any harpies, knocking them out of the sky as they're flying - regardless of the method - will result in an instant kill if you can get to them before they get up from the fall. Axii AND Aard would likely have a similar effect on humans and/or ground enemies.

Since you already necroed I'll go ahead and tag along
I haven't noticed any instant kills from Axii, even though I have it pretty strong, but I do get it from Aard. I have automatic finishers on, but I still get the button prompt. And (I use a Steam Controller because wow the keyboard controls seemed strange and unweildy to me and I almost exclusively use mouse and keyboard for games) I get instant kills with Y (strong attacks) all the time just like you said. Maybe it's a newer thing though?

I still can't figure out what the finisher setting does, though. Google is no help. It brought me here. I assume it prompts you for the slow motion animation that sometimes happens at the end of fights? Because the instant kills are not automatic even with that setting on. Or maybe it's what makes Y work for instant kills? But that seems unlikely
