What is the point of the crystal skull - quest item?

Found on the ground early on, dropped by Yen.

Will disappear if not collected before the first boss fight.

Anyone know what the point of it is yet?

The figurines I found (6x total so far) 3 of them were 50 exp mini quests from triss, the other 3 I haven't found a purpose for

the other crystal skull in area 2 has no point yet either

It is missable, if it is missable how can it be a part of the main quest

Pretty sur when you find out those skulls are important to the main quest they show you where they are.

It is confirmed to be an item that disappears with the griffin quest...

unless another prior quest makes people get it and they don't realize

Without spoiling anything: I gave it, saw one cinematic that seemed related to it, but still don't understand if and how it affected the ending...
