Key Bindings
I can forgive a lot of things, but WASD is some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and locking me into it is the worst decision on the planet.

Please expand the key mapping so I can change up everything.

Consoles couldn't handle it.

I'm left handed I need to change WASD like in Witcher 1 and 2.Can't play the game otherwise.
I can't believe that a game that has been in such a long development would not include remapping for WASD.
I use ESDF.

I agree - no key rebinding for PC is BS.

Wait there's no arrowkeys as secondaries at all?

There should at least be a .cfg or .ini file we can edit but I've been digging around for an hour and can't figure it out... fail.

I am with you....I freaking hate WASD. I am so miserable with this right now.

I found the input_qwerty.ini file, made changes, but they do not allow me to use the different keys in game. I have even verified the changes took place in the ini file.

Path I found mine (downloaded from GOG), Witcher 3 wildhunt > bin >config > r4game > legacy > base

This is where the ini file is, but clearly it doesn't make the changes translate into the game itself. I even deleted the entire Base_CharacterMovement out of the ini, but the game still allowed the 2 default key sets to work without it.

This tells me that the ini file does nothing for the game, or there is another controlling file that I cannot find / identify.

Overall, 1/10 for this developer until such time as they hot fix this mess and give PC players 100% full control over the keybinds. I fail to understand any logical reasoning behind not allowing us full control over them, it's frankly baffling and they should be ashamed.

So I tried using AutoHotKey, made the basic script

w::Numpad5
s::Numpad2
a::Numpad1
d::Numpad3

I tested this in notepad once I launched the script, pressing w,s,a,d were translating to 5,2,1,3 correctly. I figured, "sweet!".

Launched Witcher 3 again with autohotkey running, and guess what! NOPE! I am still unable to use my keypad for movement!

I go into the in-game keybind editor, and change my Jump key from spacebar to Numpad 5 just fine! It even shows up as Numpad 5 in the game! I do this again with all my numpad keys and they show up just fine in the game.

Ok, maybe if I launch the game first, THEN run autohotkey. NOPE!

So I know my autohotkey script is working just fine. I know the game see's all my keypad keys, so at this point in time I am still beyond baffled as to how the game is perm "locked" all movements to keys I can't / don't use as a Lefty =(

At least I can get a refund from GOG which will be the next step if the developers refuse to fix this mess quickly. I want to enjoy the game, but with no way to actually change my movement keys and other keybinds the way I play these games, I would rather walk away then continue a very frustrating experience.

I gotta be honest, I understand frustration in not being able to bind on all keys, but getting a refund over it, especially for a game like this is kinda... just silly, but to each their own I guess.

You got to be kidding me. I can't change my forward, backward, left, or right keys? We all don't use gamepads.

Needs to be changed before I play or I want a refund.
Dotsforlife May 18, 2015 @ 6:46pm
I'd imagine you can force change the buttons. Most games allow for that one way or another. It seems most of the keybindings are in the input_qwerty.ini file. Maybe play around with that?

File path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The Witcher 3\bin\config\r4game\legacy\base

I'd make a copy of the original though if someone decides to test it.

I have been modifying this exact ini file and still unable to get my changes to take hold. The scary part, I went ahead and created a quick script in auto hotkey, tested it in a few other games, but it won't work in Witcher 3.

Frankly, I feel the devs wrote junk coding for forcing hard keybinds.

I changed all info under "Base_CharacterMovement" to what I wanted on the keypad, but again, epic fail, nothing works.

It's really funny "in a total fail moment on devs part", that the in-game keybind changer recognizes all of my keypad keys, but when making those changes in the actual ini file, they do not work.

For fun, I even deleted everything under the "Base_CharacterMovement" section and the game still runs just fine with both wsad and up,down,left,right in game, even though the ini file had them removed. /shrug

I have even attempted to write the devs direct for help, I doubt I will get any. At least I can refund this game since I got it on GOG in the event the devs sit on their rumps and do nothing to fix this joke of a keybind system.

Unless there's something hidden that is hardcoding controls (like the mouse acceleration in the software) then there's more than likely another file/script in place that needs altering as well.

When a paying patron is unable to play the game in any reasonable fashion because of a lack of keybind functions (Which should be standard in every PC game title over the past 10+ years), then it directly impacts their desire to want said game and refund request is 100% completely legit.

Sorry if those of us who are Left Handed and use other keys, but to not have any solid options to change things so we can enjoy this game is very unreasonable in every aspect.

I'm left handed (though thankfully ambidextrous) so I know the feeling. I'm currently using my PS2 controller since I despise mouse acceleration with a passion. If I find a way to alter controls (that actually save) I'll post the details.
