Can you play as a female character?

Is your gender locked? Or your entire character? Is the current character the same one from all 3 witcher games? Just wondering~

I'd like to add this for reference because a bunch of people have already started freaking out:

I don't understand why you are freaking out? I don't know much about this game series and A LOT of folks have been talking about Skyrim and this game which makes me think this is a super create your own character game so I wondered if the main character from this game was just "default character" and I didn't know if he was actually story significant in which I think is fine, old gruff characters are fine.

You and peeps like ya need to calm down, not everyone asking questions like this want to change the game and ruin your fun. Some people are just curious and don't know.

You do get to play as a female character but only for awhile. Geralt is the focus of the game.

From what I've seen the main character will remain Geralt. The silver haired grumpy guy with scars.
Maybe there will be sequences with other characters but I don't think so.

You play as specific characters relevant to the story. Mostly Geralt though.

you will primarily play as Geralt. there are some sequences were you play as Ciri.

You will be able to play as Ceri - (Geralt's god-daughter). She too, is a witcher, and has been one since she was a young girl.

Well Geralt is "The Witcher". He's the main protagonist of all 3 games. This is probably the first time we will get to play someone other than Geralt in the games though
