It's not the steam verson. Go to GoG.com and activate it there.

Use GOG for retails (Good Old' Games or Godfried's Omni-opening Grimoire)

Retail version is for GoG.com. You have to go create an account with GoG.com and register your game there. The only way to get a Steam version if you buy the game from Steam themselves.

If you use GoG Galaxy then you can use the achivement system there for this game. GoG.com is also where you will download patches and the DLC, and if you want to get the Expansion packs you will need to buy them from GoG.com.

They didn't use Steam for their DRM for the physical versions.

Activate on GOG, then import .exe file to steam. This will allow you to start from steam, but not sure if it will track achievments though.

After you install the game you should still be able to go in Steam, and click "Games," then "add a non-Steam game to My Library," and just find TW3's .exe and you can add it that way. Then you will have steam's overlay and stuff I believe.

Overlay, and that is it. No achievements, cards, time tracking and anything else of Steam.

That kind of sucks.... Well OP, if you haven't opened the box yet, take it back and buy Steam gift cards instead, add the funds to your wallet, order TW3. Voila! :)
