Is it possible to get griffin mutagen before attacking the griffin?

I have a recipe that will make me resistant to griffin attacks, but I am lacking the mutagen to make the potion. I figure it is probably best to be as strong as possible before going to fight it since I'm playing on a hard difficulty. Is there some way to extract the mutagen from the dead female?

Nope. You gotta kill the griffin yourself to get the mutagen

Don't worry there are stronger griffins out there are are total jerks for you to use that potion for.

Just practice your underwing roll and you'll be fine. Personally i did this fight on purist, but a bit of swallow and thunderbolt can make your struggle easier.

I ended up just rolling away from it and lighting it on fire. Fire was quite useful. Then using heavy sword swings and dodging and letting it aggro on the other guy helped too.

You can't know who owns game. I have it from GoG for one.

I quenned slashed and rolled hell out of griffin on B&BB it was quite doable (died at most once until I figured attack patterns). Didnt even use crossbow or potions until much much later in game. But I did eat/drink during fight.
