I had no issues in any part of the game let alone the starter area which i was able to buy all the armors for both geralt and horsey let alone some of the mats, repair costs etc etc. so whats the problemo?
Anyway my comments address the OPs question..is x better then y at making money. Might consider adding to that if you have special knowledge of how to do so as well.
Loot everything from sacks, boxes, chests.... bring it back to a vendor and sell it (blacksmiths/armorsmiths/travellers/herbalists...whatever. If said vendor has no gold left...... either go to another vendor OR just trade in YOUR stuff for his STUFF. 1+1=2.
Break down all the clams and shells at the blacksmith for white and black pearls and sell them for more $$$$. Breaking down all alot of the silver junk into silver bars can also rack up some more $$$.
Every monster you kill ie drowners and ♥♥♥♥... collect the loot and sell the brains and all that jazz to the endors for more $.
Do every single '?' quests on the map.
Sell extra stacks. ie. 100 furs = 1 stack... you've got 130 furs... sell the 30 furs for extra $ cos you clearly do not need more than 1 stack of anything. you can even sell half of that 100 furs and you're not gonna miss out on anything.
Sell all monster trophies cos all you really need is 5% wyvern monster xp trophie that is bound to you and can't sell anyway.
Whenever you're doing a witcher quest. always bargain for a better reward... always aim for the middle point of the entire slider.... ie. if the base reward is 230 gold you might be able to ask for 10-30 more gold. if the base reward is 500 gold... you might be able to ask for 40-70 more gold.
There's free $ in horsey races and boxing matches too... 100% win unless you don't know how to race or dodge.
And for goodness sakes.... if you want all that monies... NEVER ever have pity on poor folk. whenever you get the option to take the gold or leave it... always take the damn gold. No prisoners. No mercy.
Where do you find clams and shells?
you'll pick them up every here and there in the starting area... just loot all the chests sacks etc etc.. you can find some on the sea beds in skellige as well.
You'll find clams and shells in your junk tab. same goes for all the animal furs you pick up
whenever you have $ to do so... break down the furs for crafting mats which can be used to craft things later or sold back to the vendor for $ or you can just sell the furs all by itself. same goes for the silverware junk you find. it's best to break down rather than sell them as it is.... Gold rings on the other hand you can sell by itself if you want... gold ores don't sell for much so you might get more $ back selling the ring itself.
But if i remember correctly.... some gold rings when broken down gives additional ores that might be worth some $.. so you might want to look at what you can get before breaking them down. ie amethyst powders/ores what not... they sell for quite abit.
Correct. when you bet in this game. ie. 10 gold. When you win you get 20 back. 10 yours 10 his/hers. so you made 10 gold.
When you bet in a boxing match... 50 gold. when you win... you get back 100. 50 yours 50 his.
You can sell off the pearls early on.. you don't really need them and you'll find alot of them including clams and shells you can break apart for more pearls as the game goes on.
1 more thing. As you keep playing the game you'll fight all sorts of monsters... so lets say you fought this forktail and you kill it and you get a fortail hide from it. So ie. 10 hours later you killed 30 forktails... you've now got 30give or take forktail hides... In this game you do not need to hold on to a ton of crafting materials... so if you've got 30 forktail hides or any other hides... you can sell a portion of that for $. If i've got 30 hides.. i'd usually keep 4-6 and sell the rest... same goes alot of other monster/non-monster crafting mats.
To be on the safer side... if you're planning to make a sword or piece of armor 2-5 levels away from your current level... just look up the materials you need before selling off materials for $.
Have fun
"HI I am your friendly neighborhood WItcher. I am gonna fry the livestock of all the local citizens, loot their carcasses, shove my way past you into your homes, pilfer all your valuables right in front of you, then get on my horse, gallop at full speed to the local merchant and if you are on my path, I might just run you over. And when your livestock is replenished, I will do it all over again" lol
