Just attack wait for the block to go down and attack again. When he does a down swing you need to dodge.
Keep quen up just incase and replenish it if you do get hit, its really easy to abuse some monsters in this game.
Cycolopses are literally Quen and do a fast attack whirl spam and can kill then in 1 maybe 2 whirls.. with quen up their melee wont even interrupt the whirl. Fiends can be abused easy aswell, it's reasons like this why i don't like the combat in this game much. Whirl seems to be insanely OP vs a lot of enemies
Play on death march and you need to rely on cheese tactics and overuse of potions/signs - boring
play on normal and just go all out offense can still die but not in 2-5 hits.
Edit: Quen works on him, obviously, but he doesn't leave much room for error. In hindsight what with the nature of his attacks I shoulda taken off my bear set and put on griffin.
