Map size of velen
I went to south-west edge of the map and placed the marker to the east,it shoved around 2.7 km,then placed to the north and I get 3.8km
2.7*3.8 is around 10 square km,am I missing something?
While the game is great and turned out to be worth a hype I'm wondering where the 72 km came from?

Yes, if you want to take that to stupid levels then the world would be of infinite size. Most of us are intelligent to know this is not the case and understand that there are some limitations

Exactly

I wish they just stuck mountains all around the edges of the map like in Skyrim just to shut these people up.

Mind you, I suppose they would then just moan they couldn't go to the top of it!!

True dat. Those people should spend some time swimming around Skellige under water to get an idea of how much territory there actually is.

If that measurement is accurate then no, it isn't.

Just last night I was commenting on how small the world feels based on how fast I can gallop across it compared to a game like Oblivion (37 km2).

If Valen, the largest map, is 10 km2 we know that the entire world will be less than 30 km2 and probably closer to the low 20's. This seems much more plausible to me. I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just saying I was expecting a world that was significantly larger than Skyrim because I was told it was so and I was given three maps that I can run across relatively easily.
I don't know man. I've spent a lot of time galloping around Velen and Skellige and it takes forever to get across. I don't know that this game boasted the largest map ever made, but it seems quite large, and definitely large enough.

If they did say that it has the largest map ever, larger than any video game map in history, then I could see complaints about it not being what they said. I don't remember hearing that though. I think they said it's the largest world they've made so far, which seems very accurate.

The largest map ever made is in the game Elder Scrolls II Daggerfall at 62 393 square miles. Elder Scrolls Arena could be considered larger but is not actually measurable due to it's method of procedural generation. It is estimated at around 2 million square miles.

I wonder if the map boundry ragers also get angry when they get to a coast line in the real world, and have to transition to a boat.

The scaling is probably different in The Witcher 3. Novigrad and Velen are much bigger than Skyrim.
MFINN23 30 Thg05, 2015 @ 8:37pm
It's obvious the map was intended to be bigger. They downsized for reasons.

The original plan was 100 hours if you do everything, over time they grew to 200 hours if you complete everything. They didn't downsize at all, the game grew bigger as time went by.

Maybe. Seems clear to me that the map was intended to be bigger though.

Who cares.

Just that one map is bigger than Skyrim.

Thats simply not true - CDPR themselves have said the entire game is about 20-25% larger than skyrim but that is split into 2 large maps and a few smaller ones. No one single map is bigger than Skyrim...not that i am complaining or anything, but people keep saying things like that, that are just not the case...

Okay, now we are done with being theoretical here, I actually troubled myself with launching both games and crossing the entire map from south to north.

Skyrim, Fort Dawnguard -> Winterhold : 8:00

W3 Velen/novigrad Nilfgaardian Camp -> Isolated hut : 6:20

Both games had troubles letting me just pass from one point to another, in skyrim it was mostly mountains so I had to use roads 80% of the time. After that I decided it was only fair if I mostly used roads in W3 and I did zigzaag a bit, however I was slowed by crossing rivers 2 times and some quest on a road was initiated lol, so I had to lose some time over there, if I didn't it would probably be 6:00. And I also forgot to mention, my horse in skyrim (or all horses I dunno) have unlimited sprint and you dont have to get off them to cross water (had to cross a small one, didnt delay at all)

Anyway, the conclusion is, http://www.nextpowerup.com/news/20616/the-witcher-3-map-size-is-at-least-3-5-times-larger-than-skyrim/
These statements are may as well be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, since the biggest zone in W3 is ~25% percent less than the world of skyrim.

And there you have it folks.

Though The Witcher 3 has never once felt bigger to Skyrim to me. Heck, Dragonage: IQ might even be bigger with the combined zones. Or maybe GW2.

why no one takes skillige into the calculation?

Because Velen/novigrad is the biggest map out there and skellige is mostly water, really hard to measure it, and pointless. Overall just the overworld in W3 with all locations combined may be ~1.5-2 times bigger than skyrim overworld, but then skyrim has dungeons and towns, if you add them to skyrim it will most likely appear to be bigger than W3. Also crossing skyrim somehow gave a feeling of world being denser than that of W3.

Skillige is one of the 2 big maps i mentioned - the other is valen/novigrad...but its a little unfair to include all the water in between the islands as that is pretty much empty space bar some sunken tresures - and yeah when you take into account all the dungeons and crypts in Skyrim - some of which are pretty massive, both games end up being pretty huge...

In the end its just a silly pis**ng contest though :)

what matters is variety. in skyrim everything was the same cloned dungeon with a choice between a field, a snowy field, a not so dense forest, ugly volcanic things, and a mountain that's only ever in the way. in the witcher you have islands, fields, swamps, cities, dense forests, valleys, caves, sewers, dungeons, and mountains that are not in the way

Wonder if you even played it. While crossing maps I've noticed in skyrim I started in some autumn ginger forest, went over hot springs, travelled in snowy mountains and ended on glaciers. In W3 I started in forest and ended in forest, crossed swamps two times while doing so, lol.

Such full of sh!t testing. Did anyone factor in the runing speed of both games? Did anyone factor the fact that Velen is more open than Skyrim? Skyrim is full of obstacles, mountains, hills, and etc to give the illusion that it's more massive. Testing the run speed of the horse is also not great since the horses also have different speeds. You showed no proof besides "take my word for it since I tested it" Pictures/film or it didn't happen.
