Benefits of letting NPC's keep rewards.
I've noticed in several quests (specifically for two monster contracts: lvl 2 monster in the well, lvl 8 shrieker) that when you complete them you have the option to let them keep the money.

Does this do anything in the game? If I'm super generous do I get anything in the end?

Or are there any ill effects of me bleeding townsfolk dry?

Lets be honest, this is a game, money is scarce, and I want cool things.

I doubt it other than to make you the player feel good.

You get more XP in many cases. Provided the quest isn't too low level.

This. You get more XP.

Also, there is at least one main quest point where you can 'let them keep the money' and this has a potential impact on your ending.
