There's soft-lock and hard-lock. Soft-lock lets Geralt switch targets easily and is better for groups. Hard-lock gives you extended lock-on range and doesn't change enemies at all; it's better for single targets. Either way Geralt will face the general direction of the enemy if he's in combat mode.
It's hard to initiate sprinting when you're in combat mode. Compared to Dark Souls where it's just a matter of unlocking targeting and sprinting away, Geralt needs to back-roll repeatedly until he's been given some space. Only then will he start moving his legs.
