They grown in the lakes like mushrooms. No need to fix a tub. Just pick a fine and sea worthy piece of lumber and listen ale storm while sailing.

Pop some grog or fine rum, feel the breeze of virtual waters. The seven seas or 3 1/4th of a lake awaits the brave.

Nope they don't and you can't repair them either. But there's plenty of them around. I believe they spawn at locations with an anchor on your map. Still, there's little reason to wreck them all. Just be wary of the coastlines and watch for jutting rocks. You're more likely to remain intact that way. Of course there are those run-ins with Sirens but you can minimize damage by killing them with your crossbow.

minimize damage with crossbow doesnt always work, had one flying directly into my sail and bäm instantly killed my boat xD

Wrong there are only less spots where they repawn. So if you grab a boat from a spot which have no respawn and you destroy it, it is gone forever.

He didn't dug out this 2 year old thread (that is now 4 year old thread at the time of my writing). He probably just happened to pass by it and had to "update" it base on new information.

Really helpful for those players like me who haven't finished the game yet on PC (i didn't want it to end so i just didn't finish it). Finishing it on PS4 right now.

I'm necro-ing the thread again to say the boats are just stupid. It's like they're made of defective styrofoam.. Hit a crappy waterlogged, half disintegrated piece of an old boat? BAM 1/6th of your boat is destroyed.. I'm surprised Geralt doesn't fart once in a while and blow the entire back of the boat off and screaming "F***! Why'd I eat those beans?" as the whole thing breaks apart.

The boats respawn at enough harbors you never need fear running out of them. I just fast travel to one and crash my boat to destroy it if it gets damaged, get a new one and go back out. Saves letting them clutter up the place. I cleared all the Skellige POI's twice using this method.

Just install a mod like this one:

Boom. Problem solved.

Back then the 'fast travel from anywhere' mod isn't available yet, and I doubt everyone has it installed still today. It does get somewhat annoying if the boat gets destroyed somehow in the middle of the sea at Skellige and the player gotta spend the next few minutes swimming.

Thing is you don't need a mod to fast travel to harbors from anywhere, that's just how boats work. Also, there's an auto-pilot glitch you can exploit where while accelerating the boat, if you open the world map, let up on the accelerate button/key and close the map back, the boat will keep accelerating on its own. Makes sailing around a lot easier. To stop just hit accelerate again and release as normal.

I like Swedish Pagans by Sabaton or Incense and Iron by Powerwolf.

Nah, there's only one song to listen to while failboating around. :3
