What's up with those Level ?? monsters?

Sorry if this was already posted before, but I've found some monsters (I think all guarding treasures) with a Level "??", double question marks, no numbers. They're *very* hard to beat, my level 13 Geralt barely makes a dent on them. What's up with those guys?

Just stand three feet away and use x bow or fire on em.

I don't have the game (yet), but I read you're fully allowed to go wherever... and that includes places that you probably "shouldn't be at yet" which = significantly more difficult, higher level monsters.

I'm wondering if they're a special class of monsters or just an UI glitch for the highest level ones...

?? lvl enemies are roughly 15-20 levels higher than you

I've just figured they have a "??" because they're too high of a level for you. Like a serious get the ♥♥♥♥ outta here-sign.

Came back to one that was "??" for me as level 10. Now that I'm level 18 he showed up as level 26.

It means that their lvl is really really higher than your. The best thing to do most of the time is to run away, and comes again after leveling. Keep in mind that lvl is extremly important. That's less true in low difficulty, but still important.
Try to get like 6-8 lvl more, and new stuff, after that, come again.
However as Shey said, u can probably kite them, but if u face some huge armor ennemy or distant ones, it will take a while or they will almost one shot you. Not a good deal i think. ^^

Especially if they also show up with a skull icon, that means "You're gonna die if you try to take on this monster now."

I googled this after a great encounter with a "ghost" enemy wielding a sword in skellige... I was like, ha upgraded quen, got nothin against my bubble, hit through the bubble and instakilled me...
