Counter-attacking?
I've just started playing and it seems I can't use counterattack the same way I used it in the tutorial? Granted, I've only tested it on deserter leaders... is it just that some humanoids cannot be counterattacked as they're too strong?

usually u cant counter some two handed weapons and monster attacks, but humans with sword or sword and shield are pretty easy to counter..

Deserter leaders typically have bigger weapons that can't be parried or countered. It's better to dodge around their swings and hit them while they are in a bad position.

Chronos is right. Dodge when it comes to guys with two handers and all that. Counter the ones with shields or the ones that only have a sword. Dodge drowners and bears etc.

I find counter-attacking better used for human enemies. Look for their tell signs, (lock & load), like when he raise his arms to the back, you have about 0.5 secs to right click to parry and stagger him and then quickly spam a few attacks as he stagger.

For monsters it is better to dodge them with alt+(w/a/d/s), and then strike as they recover. Sometimes it is better to keep dodging till you find a hole to strike. This is usually when you are against multiple monsters like Nekkers or the dreaded Drowners. They will try to get behind you as you attack another (natural law for ganking). So in this case you can dodge a few times time u get an opening to strike without leaving your back opened. Use this with ground roll to get out of tight situations.

All of this will at first be slightly hard. It takes a tad of practice to get used to (wax on wax off style). Once you done enough, it becomes muscle memory and you'll be dodging, parrying and kicking ass.

Have fun! :D:

You can parry some two-handed attacks but not two-handed strong attacks. (It's their advantage for giving up attack speed.) As stated: a quick dodge towards their flank right as they start their attack is best practice.

As far as pesky mobs: depending on where you are (indoors this may be impossible) mobs DO have a territorial limit. They will not go out of their 'territory' you can use this to your benefit a lot of times to manage large numbers of melee attackers. Kite them to the edge of their 'territory', then pick them off one-by-one.

You can only counter 1 handed weapon swings. You're also able to parry attacks from animals like wolves, but it's better to just dodge.

No roll needed ( in fact, if all you do is roll, you do a diservice to yourself, position is everything. Rolling stops your sign regeneration. Dodge works better. ). Hold right mouse key, right before your opponent attack, click right again. This will give you a parry, and an open for a regular attack. Every opponent has a tell.

Countering harpys is the most fun, usually puts them on the ground :D But most strong attacks stun you or go just through the block/counter.
