I did kill the demon in my first play of the game - this time i did not just to see if it could influence the quest about this bloody baron guy ... i hope so :-)
I've not played it out the other way as I was hoping to get the chance to kill the Crones later in the Return to Crookback Bog Quest, without going into details I'm not sure there is a right choice here either way people die and bad ♥♥♥♥ happens it's just what is the lesser of the 2 evils.
As I understood the spirit fulfill her part, "Gran" let the children go(maybe the spirit cast some mind control on her), to where the children gone is what isn't clear. I will try reading the "completed quest" text.

So I would say that killing it u saved a lot more.
Wish I read the book before making the decision... Eh. I mostly feel like sh*t because of the baron because I liked him.
I also felt that the ladies would keep their word unlike the tree.
Let the children die or let an even greater evil run free in the world? Nope, sorry kids.
Worst part about that choice though was that the Baron killed himself, he's one of my favorite npcs in the game so far.
I'm starting to realise that I'm a terrible witcher, since I am way to trusting.
