the dream he has at the start is only a dream but he did train ciri a long long time ago but yen was never at Kaer Morhen.
also at some point not shown in between the 1st game and the 3rd the witchers take back Kaer Morhen or maybe that is where whats his name is going to go do when he leaves.
Apperantly after the Wild Hunt kiddnapped Yen, Geralt chased after them and exhanged places with Yennifer.
Nilfgaard takes her "hostage" and helps her get her memory back.
Meanwhile Geralt is apart of the Wild Hunt until Ciri comes and rescues him by teleporting him to the forest in Kaer Moren, which is the start of the first game.
At the end of the second game Geralt gets his memory back (of his past, not his time with the Wild Hunt) and thinks Yen is still being held captive and so sets off to rescue her.
At the beginning of the third game Geralt gets a letter stating that Yennifer has been in Nilffgaurds employ during the events of the first two games.
Or at least that's my understanding of it.
I looked at this before My question. It confused me even more. It says that witcher 1 and 2 take place in 1273 but I see no mention of witcher 3 in it. I think cheechwizard's post makes a little sense but I am still not satisfied. Oh well, I'll just have to enjoy the game as is.
In the first game, Geralt reappears after years of being 'dead', having apparently escaped from the Wild Hunt. His memory is gone. He spends the game hunting down Salamandra while a racial war brews in Temeria.
At the end of the first game, Geralt prevents an assassination attempt on King Foltest's life.
In the second game, Geralt is on the trail of the group of assassins. He gets caught up in another war, and recovers his memory in the procees.
At the end of the second game, Geralt can learn of the Nilfgaardian plot to invade the Northern Realms. He also learns of Yennefer's whereabouts, and the Wild Hunt's activities.
The third game kicks off from there. Nilfgaard has invaded, Yennefer is back, and the Wild Hunt is on the prowl.
