Where do you find Thaler to get the Geralt gwent card?

SOLUTION: Got the card awhile back, you find Thaler from a quest given to you by Djisktra at the end of the Triss Merigold Novigrad quest chain. You'll know when you get the quest as you have to go to the Passiflora (fancy brothel) to see Djisktra. The gwent quest for the card is called 'Gwent: Playing Thaler' NOT Old Friends or Old Pals like the online guides say.

If you finish the quests without winning his card, you can find him at the Seven Cats Inn outside Novigrad. However, due to the different possible endings (i.e. if you start or fail the next quest in the chain), I advise people to immediately play Thaler by his wagon at the end of the quest in order to avoid any problems.

finally found him, after novigrad main quest, Djikstra will give you a new quest (optional) if you accept you'll see thaler and you can play gwynt with him and get geralt's card even if old pals is completed.

Right after the main quest he should offer you quest about king assassination.

You don't even have to do this. If you follow the Phillipa Eilhart questline you can get the card from him automaticaly without having to win it. When he said to hand her over I just chose the option the kick his ass and I got it.

There is a specific quest from Djikstra to find Thaler, however if you've progressed the main storyline too far you won't be able to get it

Once you finish the Triss Merigold quest chain in Novigrad, Djikstra will tell you on the docks to meet him in the Passiflora (posh brothel at the top of the city) NOT his normal spot in the baths. You first need to talk to the Madam of the brothel and she will take you to him. Think the quest is called 'A Deadly Plot' from memory.

Minor Main Quest Spoilers: You get the actual assassination plot quest later after you rescue Phillipa Eilhart for the main quest. You don't get it when you finish the Thaler quest, have to progress the main quest first. When you talk to Avallach on Skellige to launch the ambush, the assassination plot fails. The Thaler quest occurs before this, so if you've got this far it's too late. Check your failed quests if you're unsure about missing the quest or not, you will get it automatically unless you tell Djikstra you're not interested

Thaler stays in the Seven Cats Inn when he's not involved in quests, so just head there

I'm having trouble with this quest as well but for a different reason. I'm not even getting it. I've completed both Triss' questline and have found Thaler, but it's not giving me the quest to play him. I talk to him but there is no prompt to play gwent with him either so I'm at a bit of a loss. Also this is my second play through so spoilers aren't an issue.

If I didn't complete the assassination questline and failed it am I unable to beat thaler? I He is part of the Old Pals gwent quest apparently but I am unable to get into his house. He is also not at the 7 Cats Inn as far as I could tell.

Unless something has changed since I got all the cards 2 weeks ago he's not actually part of Old Pals, despite the online guides saying he is. He has his own quest called 'Gwent: Playing Thaler'. It does get a bit confusing as Roche mentions him in the Old Pals quest, but he's not actually a part of it.

Thaler doesn't appear in the game until you complete the first part of the assassination mission where you find him in the troll cave. As far as I know, you HAVE to do this first part. Once you complete that part you can talk to him immediately after the mission to get the card, or go to the seven cats in and wait for him to eventually turn up there. You do not have to do the second quest in the chain (actually killing the king) to get the card and you can fail this step if you want. If you want the king to live, simply find Thaler and then ignore the second quest. How did you fail the quest? It's possible for Thaler to die and make it impossible to ever get his card.

Due to the different possible endings, I advise people to immediately play Thaler by his wagon at the end of the quest in order to avoid any problems.

I won't be able to complete the collection this playthrough due to the bandit camp cage key not dropping to free the merchant from Claywich (Person in Distress event on the small island in Velen - Bandit Camp marker). Checked again after last patch but still broken.

Intermittent issue it seems as a friend had the keys drop fine for him so as a last resort there's always next playthrough.
