How does the leveling progression work?!
This is probably the only thread *not* consisting of someone whining about performance because they don't understand how to use the Nvidia Control Panel.

Anyway...

Has anyone figured out the progression system in this game? I know it's open world now but I'm only LvL 5 and I'm already in Velen working for the Bloody Baron trying to find his Bloody Wife.

Most of the witcher contracts and side quests I pick up have warnings on them in the journal along the lines of "Recommended Level: 33" or LvL 15 and so on.

I seriously can't do any of these missions and I'm already 16 hours into the game. Am I missing something here? I thought maybe I had to grind out some monster spawns but each mob I kill only gives like 4-5XP per kill.

Am I missing something here?

The main story gives quite a bit of experience and so do sidequests, witcher contracts etc. Just got to walk around in the area's picking up all the low level quests etc. You will pick up a lot of quests and so on, that you can't yet complete though.

It is all part of a open world game, you;ll run into plenty of mobs you can't beat yet. Like the village with lvl ?? Ghouls in velen, while I was lvl 8.. outsch :p

Im leveling quite fast. I have 11 hours and 41 minutes on the game and im level 11. Try and go around and collect all the quests on the boards and do the ones that you can do. Also dont fear to fights areas 2-3 levels higher than you. You also get experience from killing humans or beasts but just a little. But yeah the main quests gives the most exp so start off with them.

Ya the level ranges are a bit odd... walk north of the inn in that region and you'll find level 1 wild dogs, lvl 6 nekkers, lvl 4 drowners, and then a lvl 16 water hag and lvl 16 forktail... those last two were fun to kill as a lvl 5 on normal difficulty but I got em :D

Holy ... you're LvL 11?

Wtf did I miss going through the game? I thought Witcher3 would stick to the usual formulae of main quests giving the most XP.

On that note, is there anywhere else to look for side quests/witcher contracts besides the notice boards in Villages? The only other thing I've done is go to the "undiscovered locations" with the ?'s on the map. A lot were just places of power which gave me 1 skill point but didn't level me up at all.

I'm doing something wrong here... :(

Also go to the question marks marked you your map if you havent gone. Sometimes they do give exp and good equipment and gear.

Ok so it's not just me then.

I wonder if this is intentional or some kind of balance issue they didn't think through?

I just finished the bloody baron mission so go on with that mission. It awards a lot of exp because you get more quests added on to it if you noticed this is how this game works lol.

I dont know but i feel like im rushing this game a bit so im going to take a break because the game designers did a 25 hour speedrun on this game with its main story so ill rather not make my game that short.

Also did you clear the 1st area completely? SPOILERS!!! You kill this noonwraith and get her head as a trophy that gives you 5% exp bonus for killing monsters and humans. That might help

It's intentional.. Exploring the area's, which the game keeps telling you ever since the witcher 1, is dangerous. The level ranges make sense too.
