it seems that rank one does indeed give you 2/4 extra alternate casts, the thing is that in order to be able to use alternate cast, you have to learn the tier 2 skill that unlocks it, it does indeed work with holding down RT/Q
It's the most worthless spell out of all of them imo.
I read that Yrden was weakest a couple weeks ago, and decided to make a build which focuses mostly on Yrden. It is, like all signs, really powerful.
- the alternate mode zaps arrows, no need to have the arrow deflection skill equipped.
- the alternate mode does good damage, and it is unblockable I believe. Many fights against "boss" monsters were basically just waiting around while the alternate zapped them. E.g. the wild hunt warrior in the level 5 quest - with Keira zapping it, and Yrden zaps, it never could even attack.
- the standard mode, once there is enough intensity, puts the enemies in such a slow motion, that I don't often need to use quen in fights anymore. The Yrden ring slows them, giving time for free hits, or time to step away from their attacks.
I haven't really used Igni except to light torches and the only time I use Yrden is when I run into a noonwraith type mob.
I have first 2 levels of Aard, Quen, and Axii filled and in ability slots with a greater mutagen on them. All of them get used regularly but Quen is the all-around most valuable.
