"Take Care of Your Sword, Soldier!" & "Do It Yourself" books from Blacksmith?
So I bought both of these books and read them. After doing so, it seems like I should be able to do these repairs myself and it leads me to believe that I wouldn't need the repair kits anymore.

Is there an actual benefit to buying these two books, or is it simply just "lore"?

Commenting just in case someone has an answer to this. Went broke for those books, and I'm still being robbed for each repair! Good thing the system is broken and crafting a new item is cheaper than repairing.

I would've figured the books would have done something to either make the repairs cheaper, or allow me to use the repair kits multiple times, I dunno. I mean I have to read other notes and books to trigger certain quests/ updates, I'd imagine those would've meant something. Ya know... because it said in the book... that I could do the repairs myself.

I also thought they would allow some self-repair, especially because the vendor description implied you would be able to reap some benefit after purchase. No value so far whatsoever, which sucks because the books were not cheap.

Can't remember but doesn't it unlock the grindstone and armourer table for you to enhance your weapon / armour temporarily?

You can do that anyway. I was able to with no books.

Guys calm down... money is SO easy to come across that it doesn't matter... also not cheaper to reforge a new item you have to factor in materials... hell i'm sitting on like 8-9k orens and i've never once played gwent or did horse racing...

Yeah, before I got bored and quit playing, I was standing on like 15k orens, and never traded in the crowns or sold any gold items. It's just that at first, it's hard.

At any rate, the books do nothing at all. You even get tired of finding them on random containers.

Speaking of books I wish for a better way of sorting, filtering, or just an icon that tells if you read it already! I have so much letters, diaries, and books so I mostly always re-read a lot of them to know which ones to sell.

I don't think those books are supposed to give you the ability to repair yourself; if they were, there would not be loot drops of field repair kits. At the moment (lvl 20), my Geralt can also craft repair kits; I don't remember where I found the crafting recipe for this, but I'm pretty sure it was not from those books (which I have read).

But, as others have said, repair costs are not a problem mid-game. My character has about 10k orens and repairs rarely cost more than 250 or so.

I also just found the dwarf selling these 2 books. Bought one (care for your sword) thinking it would give an ability point or unlock some skill to repair the sword in the fields or something. Something like in skyrim, where some books would increase some skills.

Reading the book didn't do anything and it was the most expensive book I ever found (and I can resell it for a lot less.....). I will reload, I also went broke because of it.

Wait what? Isn't using repair kits already DIY enough? I get that Geralt is tough and all but fixing weapons and armor with his bare hands is asking a bit much, no?

They're not exactly free but you can craft them and they do drop as loot all over the place. I generally found myself having enough of them just from loot; while leveling anyway when you tend to switch to better weapons fairly regularly anyway. Towards the end you obviously stick with what you got and have to repair more.

Though as far as the books go, it's just backstory/lore for the most part (except for the occasional bestiary entry).

I'm just now getting around to this game. Before I dropped my entire "fortune" at my current level on the books, I took the effort to google if they did anything first. Those that don't put forth minimum effort won't just get frustrated with this game, but any game that has a currency and items similar to these.

Yeah, well. Some of us played the game upon release, and didn't have the benefit of "Googling" this stuff. Which is why he had to exchange questions on the Steam discussions. I didn't even purchase it through Steam, since I got it DRM-free from GOG.

A game should be created in a way that we don’t need to google each time something is unclear, every answer should be inside. These 2 books have misleading descriptions.
