"Thou shalt not pass" quest - need help

So I went to Oxenfurt for the Family Matters main quest, and cant cross the bridge. The soldiers merely said they dont know where to get a pass, there's no questmarker, none of the characters I have met so far have any dialogue option about passes.

Looked to the internet for help, and apparently you can ask a soldier with Axii... only such a dialogue option never showed up for me.

Anyone knows what to do?

If you intend to get inside, use a boat and enter through the dock instead.
Dont know if this finishes the quest or not.

Oh I could get inside, since Redanian soldiers are apparently freaking idiots who tell you not to pass, then watch passively as you swim across the river... But I still have the quest, and it bothers me...

LOL yeah noticed it too! Stupidly enough even the fast travel mark inside the city can be activated making the whole quest a waste of time. Just jump the bridge, swim to the city and acquire better items (likely) really CD Projekt Red??

you get the pass from a dude just outside the gate.. he helps you get a fake pass, you either buy one from him for 100, or you help his brother out in his quest, once you return he will sell it to you for 25 instead of 100

wrong gate. the OP is near the city to the east. the gate you are talking about is at the river to the north of the hanged man tree.

One of the main quest will give you the pass for free but you can always swim.

he should just use the other gate though? i'm sure it was the same quest i did from that gate.

when you go to the baron and tell him, that his daugther is with his brother he will give you a pass, so you can enter oxenfurt

Thank you for the information. Only reason I just jumped the bridge was that my silver sword was broken and I was searching for an armorer... Kind of strange that there are not much armorers directly accessible in Velen. Is the armorer from crows perch accessible during day time as I run into a locked gate at night that prevents me to reach him.

Well, thanks for the responses, everyone.

In the meantime I got 3 passes, one from a shady guy, one from the baron and one from a witcher contract.


Apparently my problem was doing the quests in the wrong order, I traveled to Oxenfurt without first speaking to the Baron and without trying to cross the Pontar towards Novigrad, and the quest can only be completed in these instances.

This apparently bugged in my favor as I had the dialogue option "I have a pass" and I was able to go through even though I don't remember ever getting one. The black market merchant's in-law died during that particular quest so I didn't get one from him. I loaded a save before having them open the gate because otherwise it will bug me if I don't get a pass properly.

Wandering around the city surroundings still looking for the dude who sells fake passes. Despite i've already entered the city by means of water thrashing. I still want to own my own pass & feel important
