Why does Geralt have such dumb fighting animations?
It seems like every other attack is some overly complicated spinning move, it makes basic attacks take so much longer to land than if he just swung the sword normally. I don't know how many times I've been hit while he is busy dancing around like a fairy.

I agree with you. It seems like quick attack should be simple thrusts and slashes, while power attack should be the fancy spins and such. It's really annoying getting hitting because Geralt is spinning through the air

That's how he fights since the first game. It's the "witcher" style of combat.

yeap. it happens so often too. There is literally no reason why he would spin around to attack someone who is RIGHT in front of him. it just gives them a free hit on me, that I can't really avoid.

This is seriously becoming a problem at the higher end difficulty. These spin moves need to go. they serve no purpose and are getting hit me hit by monsters that I shouldn't be getting hit by.

what is the point of a FAST ATTACK if it takes an extra second to pull off because Geralt is dancing around like a fairy?

Did you see his other animations like jumping? Every animation here seems terrible lol.

Read the books.

get closer, if you are far away he will do spins and flips to gain distance and avoid dmg. aka git gud and play like a witcher

This spinning style with pirouettes is, as others have said, the fighting style from the book that witchers use.
From a point of view of practicality and real swordplay, it's ridiculous and moronic. No fencer would ever be stupid enough to do pirouettes in fights.
But this is, after all, a fictional game that plays in a world where these moves aren't punished, so they are keeping the spirit of the original work.

Gameplay wise, it can be annoying but the game's combat is a bit more tactical than your usual RPG so you have to keep the sluggishness in mind when choosing your moves--just like in witcher 2. I think it also emphasizes the use of signs and other tools (traps, bombs) to create a window of opportunity where you can slash unpunished.

i agree, not only looks stupid, also plays stupid.

I always thought it would be a lot better if you could use your spells while your swordfighting rarthern than fight...stop... use spell... back to to fighting it would be a lot better if you could use sword and spells in one fluid movement.

allso he's got 2 swords and he cant use them both? why the hell not *yes i know ones a silver one for monster* but you could stab a human with one all the same.

gotta say tho the combat is vastly improved over the second game.

In order to use a "spell", Geralt has to form a sign with his fingers. That doesn't work when he's gripping a sword with both hands.
Gameplay wise it would make him far too powerful if he can do both almost simultaneously.

That aside, from a realistic point of view dual-wielding doesn't make sense. The blades are too long to do that well and two blades aren't as advantageous as people believe.
In actual (real) combat, a single blade in two hands has numerous advantages to a dual-wield style. (And likewise, a dual wield style has advantages over single sword, in particular if it's two different weapons, e.g. Sword and Axe, or Sword and Dagger, because it allows attacks that the other weapon can't perform.)

I personally hate the starting attack, the one he jumps spins and attacks.
Lord Khane May 21, 2015 @ 10:19am
I find also that clicking fast, as many seem to do when using fast attack, makes it more sluggish and allows pauses where I tend to get hit. Where when I am slower more precise with the timing I land more often and get hit less. I like the challenge it gives trying to time it right and maneuvering to position making sure to use the signs and potions to full effect. As well as no health regeneration while meditating, have to be very careful.
Could just run it on a easy setting if you don't want as much of a test of your skills.

I've played all of the witcher games, but TW3 has a much larger focus on swordplay and combat than the other 2. they -want- this to be an action RPG, but the nonsensical flashy animations dont work in context any longer.

the AI are pretty much given a free hit at will (I just tested it, the first light attack with a silver sword is always a spin, unless you are literally right on top of them)

In a 4 hit light attack combo he spins twice. yet the spin serves no purpose. you are not immune to damage during the spin, so he isn't actually dodging anything.

and @Lord Khane it's not skill, it's forcing yourself to play a certain way to deal with crappy mechanics. there is a reason why the Souls games give you so many different attack styles, combos and animations.
