I think you answerd your question yourself. Reading the books is not mandatory for playing the game, but I think the experience of playing the main story will be much more personal and enjoyable if you read them. I know thats gonna be the case for me.
Reading the books can't spoil anything cuz the story of The Witcher games starts where the books end.
Bought the books after I played withcer 2 and it turned out to be my favourite book-series of all time.
The books > the games
Read them
also how are the translations are they good?
The english translation is great, and that is the first book Geralt ever appeared in.
It is a collection of short stories, it's like reading about side quests from the witcher games. It's awesome.
The last wish
The sword of destiny (trnaslation coming 21 may, have a fan translation of decent quality)
The saga
Blood of Elves
Time of Contempt
Baptism of Fire
The Swallow's Tower (translation coming next year I think, have a decent fan translation)
Lady of the Lake (translation coming in 2017 I think, have a fan translation of lesser quality)
you also have ''Seasons of storm'' (haven't read and doesn't know much about it, but it's not a part of the saga)
The books are a good read and will GREATLY explain alot of details that will be shown in the Witcher 3. I'm sure the game will explain some of the details but that's just my speculations.
I highly recommend reading the books (if you're really interested in the Witcher's universe) or at least wiki the witcher to get the full background story since both the books and the games are connected.
There is definitely a lot of minor crossover between the books and games. You'll love em.
I'm lucky enough to have a friend translating them for me, even going out of his way to explain certain bits and pieces I may not understand due to translation and lore issues.
Even if you dislike preachiness, it's pretty much always poling fun at itself for it haha
let's say I just read the last wish would this spoil these plot lines that will playa big part in the witcher 3
