Why does this have the Sandbox tag?
Why does Witcher 3 have the Sandbox tag? A sandbox RPG is one where the player defines their own goals. It plops you down on a giant map, you can go anywhere you want, and you can interact with the world any way you want. The point of the game is not necesarily to finish all the content.
The Elder Scrolls series are examples of sandbox RPGs. You create your own character and can interact with the world in a variety of different roles. The Witcher 3 is not. In TW3 you have a predefined character and a predefined role. You cannot indirect with the world in a way that contradict's the character's personality in the cannon, i.e. murdering random people, stealing, joining a religion or cult, etc.

To quote a poster who summarzies my point pretty well.

Not all open world games are sandbox.

The Witcher 3 is an open-world game but it is not a sandbox.

What exactly do you think a sandbox is?
Yordan Feb 14, 2015 @ 8:12pm

No. Sand-box is a term meaning a game that lets playerrs set their own goals. The Witcher is not sand-box because it does not let players set their own goals, the goals are set by the designer (in this case the goal is "complete the story.") It's just open-world, not sand-box.

Yes, and in fact I am a Witcher fant. I've played the first and second game and I've been following the game since they first announced it.

If I'm dumb than you have an IQ of 75 and you're drunk.

That still doesn't make it sand-box. Do you know what other game has choices? The Walking Dead video-game. Is that a sand-box too according to you?

I'm pretty sure you're either (A) too dumb to follow logic or (B) too drunk to follow logic. Right now I'd be willing to bet you're both.

Not really. It means you define your own goals. In an RPG, defining your own goals comes in the form or choosing the class you role play and having a variety of activities you can do in the world. In The Witcher 3 you don't create a character and you're rstricted to doing things the precreated character you would do in the cannon. You can't steal, you can't kill random people, you can join a religion or a cult. You're just stuck being a witcher and doing the things witchers do.
