How do I upgrade witcher armor?
I have obtained the Ursine set, one of the best in the game so I've heard, but I'm curious how I upgrade it, I tried looking it up but all the answers were extremely long and skipped over exactly how. I completed the quest "Master Armorers" and yet still the only options I could find were to recraft the same gear. Do I need additional blueprints to upgrade it?

Yes, you need to find the recipes for the upgrades and then craft the upgrade at a master armor-/weaponsmith

I prefer to finish a game before I grab DLC for it. even if it is cheap

Witcher 3 came with the DLC's, at least when I brought it it did, perhaps they changed it.

OP, here's the basic things you need to know.
-Journeyman armorers can upgrade your Witcher school armor to Superior level, but you need to go through Enhanced level first. Past Superior level, you need a Master Armorer.
-The actual upgrades aren't unlocked until you have the diagrams for them, and those are unlocked through the Scavenger Hunt treasure hunts; merchants will sell the maps.
-Once you have the diagrams, all you need to do is to visit an Armorer. If the recipe's available, you'll see what raw materials you need.

Btw, the Ursine armor isn't always "the best". Each of the different school armors is really good for a specific playstyle, and the playstyle varies between schools. Cat School is primarily tanking, Griffin School focuses on Signs, and Ursine School is all about tanking. So if tanking is your playstyle, then Ursine's what you want. But if you favor a different playstyle, go for the school armor that suits that playstyle.

I prefer dodging, I managed to get to level 20 or so only wearing basic clothing instead of armor. So either it doesn't make a huge difference or I'm just used to playing soulsborne games and mashing the dodge buttons
