Horse racing
I always lose the race, any tips on how to get a different horse than Roach or how to go faster?

Point is to block the opponent from getting infront. Simply push him out of the way and block his path.

Roach is your only horse. As for going faster, hold shift to go faster - click shift twice and hold it to fly like the wind.

TY I didnt think to block or push the other racers as that is cheating.

You need to replace your saddle.

The more stamina your horse has, the longer they can run at top speed.

More stamina helps. Blocking helps. But you need to hold down the W key (if on PC) while holding down the Shift key and double click on the Shift key (while still holding it down) to have the horse run. If you do this, you'll win every time, provided you stay on the track. Without it you can't win. If you're using a console, I don't know what buttons to push but the principle's the same.

You can win just by blocking .. you don't even need to sprint.

You can tame other horses with AXII

Still Blocking is cheating, so I never tried that.

Using the Axii sign, you mean while we are in the race use it on opponent horse? Or do you mean something else?

Roach is the only horse you can get, onyx is mistakenly referring to a quest where you have to use Axii on a horse in order to lead it to a quest giver. AFAIK it's impossible to just use another horse except for a single race at the Vegelbud estate.

As far as how to go faster? If you're not using sprint that's your biggest issue right there. If you are and are wondering if you can go faster...not possible. It's all about stamina: how long your horse can maintain that speed before having to go back to a trot. To increase stamina you need to get progressively better saddles which can be found sometimes while looting or available from merchants. The Nilfgaard DLC actually gives you access to a high stamina saddle that will see you through the races in Velen and Novigrad, after that you certainly want to upgrade.

In terms of race strategy, what I've done is sprint from the start until your horse can't take anymore. Hopefully, as long as you stick to the track and don't trip up anywhere, you'll have a few seconds for your horse to refill part of its stamina before your opponent comes up. You can block off your opponent and the game won't see this as cheating but I've only ever had to do this once.

Using the crossbow would be cheating ;) Blocking is fair game.

Well then .. use stamina coordination. I never had any problems with horse races .. It's cheaply made.

HAve they fixed the horse race bugs where you don't start at the correct starting position?

I raced at the manor once and kept starting behind the bleachers. It was so absurd I couldn't even record it for historical purposes.
