Missing in action, can't examine shields?

During the quest missing in action, while looking for Bastion via examining shields, I will randomly lose the ability to examine them. The que to push E to examine just won't pop up. Any explinations/help?

You can only examine shield that are glowing red like Buzzard said.

So find the right ones first and then examine them.

Yes, it's the glowing red ones. I have now completed the quest, I combed the entire battlefield and it let me examine the correct shield but no others, so it's a somewhat odd glitch...

I had the same problem on my second playthrough though not on the first. I knew which shields I needed to examine. They glowed red, I pressed RMB. Nothing, whichever way I approached them. I reloaded a save, I got a bit further but when the dog is supposed to run off because he gets the scent it just stood there. I reloaded a save again and then it worked.
