The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Is Octo the boatbuilder supposed to have a quest for us?
Spoilers >>

he wants us to collect twines and nails for him. And nails can be collected and classified under Quest items. but theres no follow up conversation with him. Geralt says he will come back for him but after completing the quest Lord of Undvik and killing the Ice Giant, octo is gone.

I went back to him after I killed the giant (right after I did it) and Geralt can tell him that he killed the giant in yellow text. Octo just says something like that's great, now I can finish my boat, or I have a lot of work to do with this boat. No quest for me really.
seems like a quest scrapped last minute. I collected 42 nails

Octo is part of the Lord of Undvik quest. You're just supposed to talk to him, find out about Hjalmar and give him what he needs to fix his boat. Then proceed with the rest of the quest and the Giant.

Remember to free Folan and Vigi to have them join you at the Battle of Kaer Morhen later on. Octo doesn't count as once his boat is fixed, he's gone for good. Never was part of Hjalmar's party anyway.

how do u give him what he needs? i have the nails and twines but he didnt take them. there was no conversation options for that either.

Hmm, that's odd. He should ask for them or you offer them, don't remember. Did he tell you about Hjalmar and his men?

Yes. I did everything in order.

Anyways if u gave him what he wants, was there anything special? Like rewards or whatever
The quest is bugged, if you kill the Giant first before giving him nails he disappears. You still have the nails listed as a quest item though so if you want to upgrade set armor such as gloves which require nails you can't use them so can't upgrade the armor.. I have over 100 nails now..
I just did this on NG+, I already had a bunch of twine and nails when I first spoke to him, but there was no option to give him what he wanted. And I returned just as I had killed the giant as well, yet again there was no option to give him what he asked for, just some talk about returning to his people.
If this was supposed to be a side mission in the game that they scrapped at some point, they left it in a sorry state, it is really inconsistent in how it works for different persons.

It's a really tiny window of opportunity when you can speak with him. The workaround for it seemed to be to have the twine and nails on you already before speaking with him and the option to offer the items to him becomes available.

The thing is the guy has completely lost it. He doesn't want the stuff to fix up the boat. He wants it to fix up the skulls of his dead companions. There is no additional quest. You can take him back with you. There's absolutely nothing more to do with this guy once you've spoken with him and he tells you what he knows about Hjalmar.

So, don't even bother about the twine and nails. If you happen to stumble across them before speaking with him, great. You'll have one additional line of dialogue. If you don't, don't bother going out of your way to look for the items and then go back to him because it just isn't worth it.

The whole thing is most likely yet another instance where the devs had something planned but never put it into the game but the left the twine and nails bit active. This is why I continue to harp on the fact that this is the worst coded game in history. It is a disaster and it is also one freaking miracle that the game runs as well as it does with so many pieces of discarded code left behind.

I fully acknowledge I'm necro'ing this thread, but I just finished this quest. The whole Octo nails twine thing really bugs me. In my first conversation with Octo I told him I'd come back for him. Kill the giant, bring back the nails and twine, and he says thanks and sits down again. I don't even have the option of rescuing him. And uh, shouldn't I tell him that he no longer needs to build a ship because the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ giant is dead? And why do I still hear the giant moaning in the distance after he's dead?

It's weird, but many Skellige missions and the landscapes seem buggy. HUD pointers aren't appearing, quest threads are wonky, I crashed during the fight with the harpies in the mine...combine that with the god-awful QTEs during the giant battle and it feels like a whole different dev team was working on the Skellige island portion. And not their A team.
Octo is actually the former Jarl of Undvik, which you can find out if you investigate the island.

The quest is all sorts of buggy though. I ruined it by 1. buying a map froma trader that gave a fast travel point on the island. 2. Going there before initiating the questn "The lord of Undvik" to get the tools for the mastercraftsman quest. So I was getting snippets of quest-related dialogue and cut scenes before it made any sense. And then later when I returned for the quest it was disjointed and weird as a result.
I really had no problems with bugs until I got to Skellige...there I've seen doors that refuse to open, boats that refuse to move (not talking about in cross-wind or without you sitting down...I mean they just suddenly freeze in place and require a reset to escape)..and in the quest where you are hunting the werebears I found myself unable to use any signs while slowly choking to death on smoke (a reload fixed that too). It is a huge game with an enormous numebr of moving parts so bugs happen. If the game were easier to mod it would likely have an unofficial patch like skyrim (talk about bugs)...it is a shame.
