How do I determine which items to sell?
I just started Witcher 3 and I'm level 2.

I understand that beehives are a good source of money.

However, I'm unsure what items I should sell. Some people say keep ALL crafting and herbal materials like ores and plants. Others say sell everything.

Is there any good basic structure that I can abide by on how to sell my items and make money without lacking materials for the things I need? (bare in mind I don't know the things I need at level 2 or for the future).

Thanks

Herbs and other crafting materials I would keep (dozen or so of each should be enough for basic alchemy/crafting needs). Everything can be dismantled to materials but I tend to sell of weapons and armor (higher value than actual materials typically, also heavier so take up more 'space' in your inventory).

Good idea to occasionally take a look at diagrams you get along the way to see what materials they require and how many.

If you're not using the weight mod, I'd sell your alchemy materials that are over a count of ten, so you hold on to a total of ten of them for each item.

Sell them to herbalists/alchemists.

As for weapons/armor, make sure you sell them at the correct crafting vendor. Armor at the Armorsmith, Weapons and the Weaponsmith, etc. You get a lot more money for doing so. Or you can dismantle the gear and make new gear, provided you have the diagrams.

If you're gonna farm beehives, the best place is in White Orchard as far as I'm aware. Make sure you sell them to the herbalist on the outskirts of town. If you've talked to the Nilfgaardian commander for the story quest, you'll see her on the map as a sort of "twig" icon.

However for all crafting materials I'd say hold on to 10 of each, for ores, plates, plants, everything really. You can sell the excess IMO. But I like hoarding stuff, so I like the no weight limit mod.

Here it is if you wanna download it: http://www.nexusmods.com/witcher3/mods/3/?

Look at weight and sell the heaviest things that you don't need. Good examples are common quality gear from bandits or soldiers like swords or whatever.

Best cost to weight ratio gear to pick up is usually boots and gloves. Weigh very little usually, and they can sell for quite a bit. Weapons can be good, and then armor is usually really heavy for the amount you can sell it for.

The best thing to do is keep a number of everything and sell the rest. So if I have more than 10 of any alchemy stuff I'll sell the excess. NEVER sell the alcohol you use in potions though. Get rid of crap like excess bear skins and that sort of heavy stuff unless you have a lot of empty room in your saddle bags or if you intend to get something crafted - in whcih case work out what you need and plan towards that. NEVER sell witcher gear. Get rid of excess swords and clubs etc - just pick the best one or two and dump the rest. Always have 2 steel swords in case youre in a dungeon or something and your equipped one gets damaged with no way to fix it. Same goes for spare armour - just in case. NEVER sell silver and rare stuff - that will come in handy sooner or later adn its expensieve to buy and rare-ish to find. Sell all your books and stuff once youve read them.

Hope that helps

Do witcher contracts for money. Always check your alchemy and crafting menu reguleralry to see what items u would like to craft and what ingredients do you need.

Also, loot every enemy you kill, all items that aren`t weapon or armor are almost weightless. You can get some money from spare weapons and armors, but sell them to right merchant (blacksmith will give u more for weapons, armorer more for armors, etc.)

Also buy horsebacks for more invntory room.

For myself, I have been selling all weapons/armors. Been keeping all the crafting materials. Sell the junk items in the last tab only keeping the pure silver and the fisstech, and anything that says 'needed for a quest". At level 14 I have 8K crowns, and there is hardly anything to buy.

So to the OP, just sell the armor/weapons and junk, you will get plenty of money.

Anything that is heavy, get rid of it.

You can carry a lot, because in this game, most of the items are considered weightless.

Practically.

Once you figure out how worthless many of the items in the game are, you can then begin pawning off anything and everything, keeping only a small stock of each. Or nothing at all works, too.

If you become rich, you can easily buy what's needed. It's not like you won't be able to finish the game because you accidentally sold an item.

It's a very easy game.

I just sold anything to anyone and still ended the game with 30K more or less useless gold. Unless you're absolutely dead set on clearing a gigantic useless bank roll there's no need to be too anal about whom you sell to.

It is important later on, IMO, to get the saddlebags from the merchant at the King of Beggars in Novigrad when you can, to reduce the frequency of hauling stuff back to sell it. This will increase your weight limit by 100. Can also get it if you race enough.

Keep all materials & herbs...selll all armor and weps you can't use. (you can drop items for later use or selling...I use a blacksmiths shop, they will be there later for you to pick back up and sell or use)
Sell everything that doesn't say "Quest item" in the last inventory slot.

Playing on the hardest difficulty for my first playthrough.

Thanks for the replies guys :)
Sell all but 10 of each herb. Keep all silver/ores. Sell all weapons/armour to the weapon/armourmasters. Sell stuff like excess bear skins and most other materials. Thanks guys!

The only junk you should pick up are hides then sell them all.

Crafting materials don't weigh enough to be an issue. Don't pick up 50 rakes, chairs, tables and stuff them in your pocket and you'll be fine.

A dozen of each ingredients is fine. Then all you have to do is read the books/letters found and then you can sell them. If they are related to a quest, it will go into the quest inventory and will be impossible to sell. You can also sell all the junk stuff.

if you are a hoarder like me.

Once you get to Novigrad, go into King Begger's area merchant and buy the best Saddlebag.

Junk and weapons holds most weight

dismantle all Junk as they cost only 1c (except for hides, you can sell those if you want)
As you dismantle them you will rack up lots of mats.
For crafting materials you do not need more than 20.

You can sell all food and only keep water. Especially beers. You wont be eating most of it. In novigrad alone your water can easily reach 100 if you go around looting.

For your repair kit ( use them whenever you have the chance). You will never run out of it nor will you ever need to repair your stuff from blacksmith as will pick up better gear very often. you can dismantle them if you want.

For alchemy ingredients you do not need more than 10 so just sell them except
- Arenaria for some potions and for many White Gulls)
- Celandine and Blowball you may need more than 10 ( they are very common, both are yellow)
- others can easily be bought when you need them, so you do not really need to carry them.

I ransack every hut, corners and corridors, so i do this to make sure my inventory is as light as possible.

As for money, you do not need to farm at all. Just do quests, very soon you will be rich and nothing to spend on. Everything is easily obtainable. The only time you need to spend money is to buy gwent cards (20c or so each) or if you want to buy alchemy ingredients you need ( 15g for one ergot seed =.= ) . You will have gold piling up sooner or later.
