So I turned off the minimap.
I remember that I've seen that in a video, best thing I've ever done. Now I can actually look and focus in the World instead of looking at that small map. I got lost a lot of times, but now I can actually "know" where places are. You guys should try.

Love not playing with a minimap, I do this in skyrim too, my skyrim actually has no hud what so ever haha! (besides crosshair for ranged attack)

This game really needs an option to keybind hiding the HUD also some things just shouldn't show unless needed like only show active quest log when it gets updated then fade out, only show boat health when not full etc.

Do you fast travel everywhere?

You literally cannot play the game without the minimap enabled if you don't. You'll spend most of your time looking at the map than you do playing.

Enable debug console, then set the hide UI command to a macro button. Then you can just toggle the entire UI with a single button press.

Not practical to most, but once set up it's quick. They really need to patch an option like this in though, the UI ruins some great screenshots.

That's how I play Skyrim too. I haven't exactly turned off the minimap, I just don't look at it anymore though I guess, sometimes when I get attacked I'll get alertted first by the minimap because of the movements that show there.

Turning off the minimap in The Witcher III is not a bad idea, maybe I'll try it. But for now - I'm still at the start of the game - I sometimes use it to find herbs when I can't easily see them in the nearby vicinity (like in the forest at night, i.e.).

You've got a point. Personally I do use the map when I decide where to go next - most of the time, anyway. I like to see where the path that's dotted out on the mini map leads and how fart it goes, if it's worth walking by foot and if there are interesting sites that I might want to visit on the way but which will require me to take a small detour. So though I use a combination of the mini map and the map, I don't find it limiting. On the contrary, actually.

I can see what OP means, but I like to take advantage of all the tools made available in the game - at least for now.

Yes you can, at first you'll be looking at the map a lot, but once you get to know the land you'll hardly get lost again, the game is detailed enough so you can memorize land marks with ease.

It takes a bit of time though, for me it was worth it, but I understand that it can be hard for most.

I only wish you could make the minimap not rotate but always point towards north, with the player icon rotating. Rotating minimaps are cancer and make it practically impossible to look at the map, plan a route, and then follow it using the minimap.

Have had it off from the start, along with all other UI. I can kind of navigate my way around but i have to open the world map quite a lot... still it's worth it cause i can see more of the beautiful world now instead of staring at a piece of UI half the game.

Well thanks a lot, never found it.

Stupid location imo, something like that belongs to gameplay, not in a sub-menu of graphics....

Nah no thanks, I get lost all the time in the real world so I'm not very fond of getting lost in a bloody game too.

I tried it for 5 minutes before remembering, some icons dont all appear on the map. You have to be close before it pops up. So rather than becoming paranoid I've missed something (vendor, innkeeper, blacksmith etc.) i just turned it back on.

Had a blast though, felt much more immersive, instead of have google maps open.
Kain Jun 10, 2015 @ 12:23pm
Well, what I did in each map was first time I got there I would explore everything without trying to do quests and such, just unlock fast travels and such, after I did that I turn it off, but yeah, I understand your sense of paranoia. But most cases "!" marks for example show up on the map after you uncover it for the first time, specially after you move the story forward.

In The Witcher 2 I was using a mod with similar functionality, "Dynamic HUD".

Check the Nexus from time to time, maybe somebody will release similar mod for W3.

Playing without minimap seems painful.

Hide UI binding is needed indeed.

Thanks I didn't notice that option before!

Ah, can't wait for some UI mods!

Bad idea. You'll miss too many things.

And waste too many minutes looking for them.

Unnecessary torture is not recommended.
