WHY CAN'T I REVERT BACK TO 4.0???????????

My mod order got fcked. game auto updated to 4.2 is there anyway to revert back to version 4.0? the game only allows to go back to version 1.32

Rolling back to 4.00 should be able on GOG, on steam Granudo showed the way how to do it to 4.01 update:

So, you need only get to the part where you open the steam console, after that execute this line:
download_depot 292030 292042 4301342286048031658

With this Steam gonna download both dx12 and dx11 witcher3.exe from 4.01 version, go to the folder where saved (steamapps/content), copy the witcher3.exe from the folder x64, go to the exact folder in the game files and paste there (for security, backup the 4.02 .exe).

And that is it, the game now loaded normally and I was able to play again, in the main menu is showing 4.01 version.

I deleted too the user.settings.ini on Documents/Witcher 3 but I dont know if is necessary.

it'll only change the executables what about the scripts, content etc.

like in 4.00 you don't be able to use HBAO+ option added at 4.02 update, but every other content from 4.01 should be ok, i think. Didn't test that but for Granudo everything seems to be working fine, if not then probably he wold say so. It's may be temporary solution untill CDPR finaly realease properly update.

While having steam open press Windows key + R to run this address and enable your steam console: steam://open/console

then copy and paste this on your steam console:
download_depot 292030 292042 4301342286048031658

it will download a previous version of the game, more precisely the executable. Go to the downloaded file direction, to me it was:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\content\app_292030\depot_292042

Copy the file and go to TheWitcher3/bin/x64 or x64_dx12 depending where you took it from and replace it with the original .exe (you may want to back it up just in case)

And that's it, Turn off automatic updates and enjoy till they come up with a proper fix for this.

it would crash on the loading screen, couldn't even play 1second but this worked for me, kinda lost interest in keep on playing tho
