Left over ability points
I am level 30 and have maxed the 12 skills that I use. I still have 10 points unspent, with presumably more to come. What am I missing? Am I supposed to just spend on the other skills I am not going to use? I feel like my character is no longer progressing (apart from equipment upgrades of course).

My answer is just a guess since I'm lvl 18 but you can just switch skills right. So use the points in other skills you like and mix and match?

Don't spend them all incase I'm wrong lol

I spent most of my time only using a few skills like you. I absolutely regret it. I'm level 29 and I finally started to use my spare points for other things. It is so much more fun now. Instead of allowing Geralt to max out certain abilities (in my opinion, it makes Geralt way too OP) try some other abilities. It makes the game a lot more interesting exploring other builds and using other strategies preparing for and during combat.

Only 12 skills can be slotted at any given moment (until you learn mutations), but you can learn additional skills and then swap any learned skills in/out of the slotted group. For example, you might want to maximize toxicity, buff up with like 5 decoctions, then swap out the skills that you needed in order to buff up in favor of some more combat oriented skills. When the decoctions wear off, rinse and repeat. This is common (?) practice with the Euphoria mutation.

Yea if you have Blood and Wine, keep those unused points (or if you want you can buy the reset potion), as that expansion unlocks a whole new type of abilities (mutation) which you can then invest these unused points on

This. Mutation will eat up all those 12 skill points and more. In fact, you will wish you had more.

At which part of the game you're on? If you still haven't touch the two expansions than there's still a lot to explore and do. Then there's the New Game+... like they said you wish you had more skill points.

Yah. If you do have Blood & Wine, there's a side quest in it that will open up a "mutation" system. There's a small web of mutations to unlock (a web, as all but three require other mutations to be unlocked first). You can only have one mutation active at any given time, but even if you favor a specific one, you still benefit from unlocking others as possible -- you can get up to four additional skill slots in total as you unlock more and more mutations.

And each mutation will require anywhere between two to seven skill points to unlock (in addition to everything you already spent on unlocking the prerequisite mutations) and an equal number of greater mutagens of specific colors, too. You need to unlock all twelve mutations if you want that fourth added skill slot, for... uh, 49 skill points and greater mutagens. :P

If you don't have it, then the only use for 'extra' skill points is to have more skills that you could slot in depending on the situation or your mood.

I like the mod that keeps "General" type skills active at all times, or you can also use one that just gives you more slots to use. Maybe even both if you feel like it

It really comes down to how much you consider it to be cheating, since you can start getting super strong once you have enough skill points to start going past the vanilla limits, but I've always been a fan of games that make your character insanely strong and impossible to beat once you're high enough level

Nice

Would have made sense to have a dedicated ability slot at least for one armor school technique. Sacrificing a 15% bonus (greater mutagen + synergy) in addition to the opportunity cost of whatever else might have been slotted in is a bit of a pity.

Looksl ike https://www.nexusmods.com/witcher3/mods/7156?tab=description for general skills being always active. Neat.
