What's the point of the crossbow?
It does 4-6 (I bought a new one, now it does 5-7, woo!) damage.

It is effectively useless.

Are there special bolts which make it more useful?

Do any of you use it at all?

Yes there are special bolts. Crossbow is amazing underwater and the only weapon you can use underwater.

Crossbow is also very good since it has target auto lock on if you double tab the bumper. There are also stronger crossbow then 5-7 damage but you have to craft those.

Depends on the situation. It's an excellent weapon for fighting flying creatures and essential for fighting underwater. The special bolts are okay, each bolt has a fairly niche usefulness. Tracking bolts are good for monsters that like to dissapear
Explosive ones I use for blowing up barrels and gas deposits at long range
Precison ones are good for having an extra damage boost I guess?
Bait bolts I have yet to use successfully. I believe you can bait a monster into attacking an enemy you shoot with it, but I'm not sure.

So it's more like a useful tool than a weapon. Like Batman's grappling hook.

You can get better bolts. But generally I don't think the crossbow is utilized all that much. Its main uses are for bringing down flying enemies and or underwater enemies. Its the only weapon you can use against drowners underwater.

Put away your sword before using the crossbow. For whatever reason, crossbow damage is bugged, and does substantially less if you have a sword out. Or has that been bug been fixed? That, and crossbows are meant to be only side weapons.

its not the actual damage it does, if you notice it says silver damage and it ranges between 100 to 200% from up to like lvl 30. so yeah the Silver % damage changes, not the actual damage which is like 5-7

Use it underwater - got it.

I always use a few skill points toward crossbow, as it will give extra time to aim underwater or flying enemies for head shots. There is also in the survival tab of skills a point to add for extra crossbow damage that is helpful. Also as you level up throughout the game, you will pick up as loot better crossbows and bolts. It is helpful to do the Swords and Dumplings quest - not only is Hattori a master sword smith but can make crossbow bolts. (Make sure to loot harpy bodies for feathers that can be "dismantled" into regular feathers for bolts.)

Use it under water & use it to drop flying monsters to the ground so you can use your sword on them. Other than that it is worthless.

Explosive bolts are great for deer and goat hunting.
