To answer the OP's question, one of the DLCs (I think it's Hearts of Stone) adds a Runewright from Zerrikania that can add sockets up to that gear item's max. So swords and amor can have sockets added up to 3. I haven't tried adding sockets to socketless gauntlets or trousers. However, I am not able to get the Runewright to add more sockets to gauntlets or trousers when they have one and two sockets, respectively. There seems to be a maximum number of sockets for each type of armor that cannot be exceeded, even with the Runewright.
