Not all merchants have the same prices. In general, they pay more for the types of items they specialize in (blacksmiths for armor and weapons, alchemists for ingredients, booksellers for books, etc.), and general merchants that buy everything have worse prices. In rich areas like Novigrad they tend to pay more than in poor villages. Also, some of them have unusually good prices, like an alchemist just outside Novigrad to the north, although he is only available for a limited time.
