Log out of game, but music continues playing.
Have anybody experienced this?

I even tried to exit Steam but was told to exit The Witcher III first, and obviously I can't do that because I already did it. So it seems I'm stuck.

I tried launching another game which went fine, but the music continued and that wasn't so fine.

Right now I'm having a download running which - if I'm correct - would be on pause if I had a game running.

So for now, at least, I can't play another game nor watch a video or listen to a podcast because... well, I believe the reason is obvious.

Thank "the g0ds" that I love the music from all three The Witcher games or I would go crazy by now - especially as I happen to be logging out because I have a splitting headache (which has nothing to do with gaming or with Steam), and it does demand quiet.
.........

I remember noticing that the music would linger a tiny bit longer after I log out, as well as back when I had the many CTD, it happened there too. But nothing ever this long. The mucis is still playing as I write this, and I have tried logging out of Steam (though I think I only closed the window, there's a different option saying "Exit Steam"), I've tried launching another game and Then exiting Stean, both times being told to log out of The Witcher III first.

I have a download running right now which was paused automatically when I was playing The Witcher, so something somewhere in the system is aware that I'm no longer logged in.

I wonder what happens if I try to log into The Withcer III again now? I'll do that, then update this post, and then finally turn off my PC because I have a splitting headache that demands quiet.
.........

Any thoughts? Solutions? I'd love to hear them.

Anybody experience(d) the same but didn't find a solution? I'd appreciate hearing about that too, because if it's more than one single player having this issue it can only be helpful if we make it known.

Thanks in advance.

I've had the same problem, normally what I just do is end TW3 in the "Processes" tab of the Task Manager.

UPDATE...

Okay, I went and tried launching The Withcer III again (the game who's music is still playing now, about an hour after I logged out of the game), and this is what happened...

I received an error message saying:
_________________________________________

Steam error

The game cannot be launched at this time because you have another game launch in progress. Please wait until that is complete.

At least the 'Steam error' part is correct, but I am not trying to launch other games. - When I Did launch another game, the download I have running immediately was paused. I canceled the game launch because I didn't need to actually play the game, I now knew I could launch it, and there was no error message when I started launching it.

I'll check that out. Thanks for the tip.

I bet you and me are not alone with this, buddy. The others have just done what you have done whereas I'm a little new to computing so there's still a lot I don't know how to do, and a lot of options I don't know where to to look for, :p.

I had the same problem when I was using the EVGA Precision 16 program to display framerates while playing the game. Once I turned off the framerate display then Witcher 3 exited correctly and didn't hand in memory. You may have another program running in the background that is preventing Witcher 3 from exiting properly.

Uhm, where do I find Task Manager? I've looked through all the drop down menus on my account and don't see it there. I guess it must be under one of the options listed there, but there are many options, so I ask in hope of not having to go through them all.

Ctrl+alt+delete, assuming you're running windows. It's the last option on the page that comes up.

Actually I've been wondering about where I could make frame rates visitble in The Witcher III. I know my settings are on 60 FPS, but seeing in-game how it is in reality, I don't know how to do that. And that kind of makes me think that may not be what creates the issue for me - though I may be completely wrong, hehe.

Also, what kind of program could prevent a game from exiting properly? Nvidia?

As I mention above there's always been this tiny delay in the music stopping when I close the game (or when it is being closed by a crash), and though this lengthy continuation of the music (it's still playing) is a first, I think the two are linked and the former may hold some kind of clue - like you said, it may be another program causing this. I just wonder what kind of program could do that? Any ideas?

Yeah, I have Windows 10 (just got it sometime during the week), so I assume it's the same as on other WIndows OS'es. Thanks, I'll try it immediately. Brb with how it went.

Back.

I did as you wrote and fount it. The Task Manager was listed and I opened it, but only Steam and two browsers were listed. Shouldn't The Witcher have been there? Or did you mean to say you just used to simply close down Steam and solve the Witcher III music problem that way?

...I'm going to try it and then come back and see if you or anybody have left any new responses. If there aren't any I'll have to log out for a while because my headache has become really overwhelming by now. But I'll be back later and see how things go.

Either way, thanks for all the help, guys.

.........
P.S. Oh, and John W, I read your post again and realized you'd been using a program to be able to see the framerate in-game; it wasn't about some setting. Sorry I misunderstood that the first time around.

P.P.S. jweldy, I owe you a special one for guiding me with how to find that task manager, it's something I can use in many other instances, so thanks a lot for that.

To see your fps, click on "Steam" in the top left corner - click Settings - than click In-Game.

Okay, back a fourth time.

First I went into the Task Manager and hit 'End Task" for Steam.
So the Steam icon disappeared but the music continued!!
Then I clicked for more details and a whole list of applications and programs that were running came up.

- Among them were Steam (apparently still running), and The Withcer III (as the only game on the list).

I was insecure about 'ending' it, but did it anyway and the music immediately disappeared.

Then I closed down the Task Manager.
I re-launched Steam which updated as always when it's launched (good practicew, by the way), and here I am reporting my success.
.........

I have written my activity line by line so as to make the overview easier for orhers who may come looking for a solution in the event they run into the same issue.

And now once more: Your assistance is much appreciated, guys.

Thanks for the tip. This way I can choose to let it show my FPS in one of the corners while in-game. How neat.

This makes me want to explore much more of the Steam features. There's a lot more to Steam than I was aware of, I must admit.

Thanks for helping me get to know yet a piece of useful info.

Back after a good night's sleep and just had an hour or so to play, so I launched The Witcher III as usual, but within the last 35 min I've had two major crashes. The first time it just froze as 'in the old days', the secoind time the Nvidia drivers stopped responding, then restored, then stopped, and so on, never recovered the game and there was this loud BBBRRRRRRh sound while the picture sat frozen on the screen.

I am now downloading a driver, here:
http://www.nvidia.co.uk/content/DriverDownload-March2009/confirmation.php?url=/Windows/353.62/353.62-desktop-win10-32bit-international-whql.exe&lang=uk&type=GeForce

and hope that'll do the trick. I'll be back with an update about how it goes.

I couldn't install the driver. Though it was specifically found because I have Windows 10 and yet haven't updated the driver for that, it says this driver isn't compatible with my system, but not why. Yet it mentions my Nvidia version and Windows version everywhere on the page and on pages that it directs to, so it's pretty confusing.

I don't really know of any other options now to make my game work.

Ideas are welcome.
