I just found out something amazing with the controls!
If you hold the gallop button on your horse he automatically follows the road. This whole time I was controlling the road with the movement buttons but if you just hold it he automatically follows the road and he goes around any objects in his way like trees. Horse A.I is spot on. 10/10.

Heh, it's definitely a cool feature. I think they mentioned it in the tutorials early on but I'm sure there are other things that I missed.

I coun't figure why people were complaining about Roach. I thought the horse always worked great, unlike DA:I, terrible. I just always used mouse and galloped

I guess people never figured this little part out. I have absolutely no problems controlling the horse either. It practically controls itself.

Best horse ever ^^

Everything is explained during the first part of the game. Just dont hit spacebar blindly.

And if you didn't know you can tap jump to make Roach leap over objects or off small cliffs. Makes getting around when you go off the path a lot easier and faster.
Also, when attacking on horseback you can hold the attack button to slow time a bit and line up your swing better.
The horse AI is really good with the exception of where Roach spawns and how slow he moves when you whistle for him.

I'd say using that feature works correctly 50% of the time. Often it will run into things especially stone walls, bridges, and if there is a cross roads it's completely random where he goes.

Another thing poorly implemented in the game.
It is a neat feature but only works for me with a controller not the keyboard.

They announced this in a video somewhere before release, so lol this isn't anything new :p Yup, just hold down the button and she'll follow the road. It's excelently implemented, and the only time you're required to react is at crossroads where you can nudge the stick in the direction you want to go and Roach will head that way. You may occasionally bump into things but its pretty seldom.

They are improving his pathing around tight areas including bridges. Sometimes (currently) he/she will just come to a dead stop, when crossing bridges for example, but that will be fixed in 1.07.

I think his behavior is great and an enormous improvement over DA:I, Uncharted 3, etc. etc. but to be honest, he might only be 2nd or 3rd in my book. Top spot going to any horse in Read Dead Redemption, they were absolutely fantastic. 2nd possibly going to the horse in The Last of Us, which I just thought was very well modeled had a very physical presence and behaved as you would expect a horse to behave, nothing fancy though in terms of AI or anything.

So where the hell is that HD remaster of Read Dead Redemption that I need so so badly...

Yeah, this was covered in the tutorial. The only annoying thing about it is how it doesn't automatically follow the correct path to your current quest destination, so you still have to pay close attention. You can't rely on this auto-pilot mode to get you where you want to go.

Another thing that would be nice is if the mini-map zoomed out some while you're in full gallop mode.
