Geralt Will Not Draw His Sword
Whenever I approach enemies, Geralt will not draw his sword until he's been hit a couple of times. This is especially frustrating when I face men with crossbows. He just walks up to enemies with his fists raised like ♥♥♥♥♥♥. Infuriating.

Is there a way to manually draw your sword? Am I the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ for not seeing it myself? Also, is there a way to choose which one of his two swords to use?

I told you^

"Just imagine if someone had suggested checking the control options".. I was right. Total melt down. State of it in here now..
I apologize for any mayhem my words may have caused. I'm sure Hex will try to be more mindful before wielding the ungodly power that is common sense hence forth.

when you hold just the crossbow, geralt will not takes swords when mobs come close, resulting he will fist fight. you need to take swords manually.
If you want to avoid it, always have the sword in the hand before using crossbow. or use crossbow only after he automatically took the swords.

Or leave the crossbow totally out of the equation as it's all but totally worthless against anything that isn't flying or under water.

Ah, thanks. That actually helped. :)

If I may be so presumptious as to add my humble observation to this discussion, I deeply wish that each and everyone of you wiil one day know the pleasure of kissing a girl and the fierce satisfaction of passing one's driving test. This I wish for you as I stand in awe of the witty rejoinders festooning this page. Why, a forthright question was asked in a straightforward manner, a polite request for assistance, nothing to see here folks! And yet the comic giants of Mom's basement unsheathed their rapier wit to mercilessly skewer the poor petitioner. May your wit and wisdom never falter!

Good luck with the girl kissing and, hey, lots of guys take a few goes to pass drivers ed!

PS> No offense to those who asked/tried to help answer the question first posited here. To the Acolytes of the Church of the Cheap Shot, I hear there's easy pickin's over at the Super Mario Brother forums.

This might help someone.

During exploration of Touissant I wasn't able to draw any sword, so I checked quests - and there it was. Big Feet to Fill: Second Group task accidentally started without possibility to complete it. I wasn't able to get any closer to workers - like they were under the invisible dome (thanks, Stephen King!).

Workaround (literally): I've tried to reach worker I had to do some "fisting" with - I did it with Igni sign. When he stepped out (after a while he called for a friend!) I was able to deliver to him some democracy and finish the hot damn quest. After completing it swords could be drawed again.

I don't understand the sarcastic remarks about unable to press 1 & 2 but every time there was dialogue which would then turn in to a fight, Geralt starts with his fists up and doesn't draw his sword, you then roll away and spam 1 or 2 depending on which sword you need and he still doesn't draw it thus letting you get hit a few times before he automatically pulls one of the swords out. This doesn't happen all the time but it can get ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ annoying..

(And no they're not the fist only fights that won't allow weapons)

Yeah pressing 1 or 2 depending on enemies is hard.

Tell me, are you missing fingers or something? Or did it just never occur to you to check your in-game settings before coming to the forums? Some people...

Well thank you, due to your comment I did figure out how to draw my sword when Geralt doesn't do it automatically. In addition, I guess when you played your first open world RPG, you never had any questions at all and figured it all out on your own. In which case I respect that. But would it truly hurt you to be kind to the noobs amongst us who do not have your superior knowledge and may at times have questions whilst figuring out what is, for us, a completely new concept? Or should we just stay away because we haven't been introduced to it in time and are now stupid idiots because of it? Thank you in advance for your answer :)

Geralt Will Not Draw His Sword
Damn this sounds like a title of some epic fan fiction about Geralt having problems with women :D

Thank you sir you saved my day!
I did the exact same thing, i got too close to that bunch of drunken workers near the water and one became hostile and tried to fist fight me. I rode away because i didn't want to start that quest yet. Then soon after i found out that i couldn't for the love of god draw my sword to cut down the archespores. I got so frustrated after S/L several times and quit the game a few times and still wouldn't solve the issue.
Hope everyone could just post useful comment like you instead of mindless banter.

Check keybinds for the buttons bound to the weapons, Check Gameplay Options and turn off 'Manually Draw Swords'.
And also I beat every boss in the game with fists on Blood and Broken Bones difficulty with the exception of wraiths, werewolves and That one incect boss in the side quest
