It's more of a moral choice. First time you meet the Nilfgardian Captain, he seems honest and I especially liked the "look at my hands boy, I'm a peasant" type of thinking. Then he started lashing the poor boy for rotten grain.

I refused him since money is easy to gather in Witcher 3.

I found it justified. He was nice and gave the peasant a real chance. Then the guy brings him ♥♥♥♥. As the guy in command he can't seem weak.
