Saltpeter badly needed, but...
...where can I find or buy it?

I've been looking to get more Saltpeter for quite some time now. I've searched for it ever since I started crafting armor and swords, and it's also need for some of the decoctions. But so far I've only been lucky to find a total of around 20 piles of Saltpeter and now there's only 8 left. Since 5 piles of Saltpeter is needed in almost everything it is needed for, I have to find more since I'm about to go on a treasure hunt for all the Ursine gear.

I already have about a third of the diagrams but haven't crafted them yet, so I'll need Saltpeter for the whole lot. Therefore, if somebody can help me out and tell me where I can either find or buy some, I'll be very grateful.

Thank you in advance.

I found a halfing alchemist south of the main square in Novigrad that had plenty, but there's no telling how often the stock replenishes or whether he'll have more then a few at a time. Look for the branch icon on your minimap (didn't appear on my world map).

There should be a quest that takes you to a cave with some elementals in velen, I believe one of the chests holds 10 saltpeter

You can buy out whatever they sell and then back out and go back in to his inventory and buy again. They restock every time you check their inventory. At least from the merchents I bought from did unless that was changed with an update.

The Eternal Fire Priest / Alchemist at Elector's Square in Novigrad's Temple Isle sells saltpeter, and like Blade12775 said, you can just buy it all, exit the trade menu, re-open it and grinse and repeat till you're done with it.

Thanks, everybody for the tips. For some reason I still didn't find anybody in Novigrad who sold Saltpeter, but I went to White Orchard and bought some from the beautiful alchemist there, and later when I traveled Skellige (which I've already been doing for a while), I found another alchemist who also sold some, and then I came upon one who lives in the area where your chest is at.

I'll no doubt soon need more again, but then I'll just go to the places I mentioned.

For some reason I didn't find that Eternal Fire Priest at Elector's Square. I'll look for him again. (I never thought you could buy anything from the priests.)

The quest that takes you to a cave with elementals in Velen....I don't recall having sone that but it's possible that I have and that this was where I found the first 10 stacks since that's the number I had for a long time until I began crafting stuff that included them.

Saltpeter is obviously not one of the plentiful ingredients in the world of The Witcher III, but at least there are some specific places where you can get them when only you know where to go.

Thanks again, guys.
