The CPU can go to even 85 degrees and will be ok. When your CPU hits 100 degrees celcius, then it sends a shutdown signal to the motherboard.

So you are perfectly good with 70-75 degrees.

Yeah, 40 is a bit optimistic for you unless its idle, in games, I would assume it to be about 70-75 ideally, but your safe up to like 85C(if its an Intel CPU).

You can get a decent aftermarket cooler for around $50, then all your worries will go away

You can get a decent cooler for 25, I'd expect a good/very good one for that much

OK you got me, I'd have to agree, very good one $50. I have a Phanteks PH-TC12DX, no worries. $ aaprox. $50

It sounds like you need a different cooling system or more room, hence a larger case. Cpu's are designed to shut the computer down when their heat threshold has been reached so it doesn't burn out.

If you have Intel you don't have to worry about temps under 90 degrees.

But buying that better cooler will help you with life expectancy and ofcourse will take those bad thoughts away.
Something i really can advice as a good cooler is not that expencive.

AMD max is 61 C.
Intel max is 90 C.

TJM max temps most modern day CPU's those made from I would say a safe level of 2010 forward anybefore 2010 I refer to them as last gen CPU's. All are desinged to run up to I put it at 90 C, max where as really they are designed to get up to 100C before they begin to cook themselves. By cook they melt there thermal paste and just begin to burn out I have a laptop that I bought back in 2013 gaming laptop that has a 4th gen i7 on some games. I would get up to 75 C, which is hot but not critical levels for a CPU. As for the cooler I hope you are not using the stock cooler that came with your CPU and are using some after market air cooler instead. The ones that come with the CPU are not that great for those who intend to use them for gaming purposes. If you do decide to get an after market cooler check your CPU on pcpart picker for compatible coolers I run an after market corsair h100i water block which has my idle temps between 25-30 C and a max temp of 45 C under heavy useage. There are a ton of options for coolers I have heard the evo 212 is a great option for air cooled heatsinks and is only $30.74 on amazon and is prime eligible.

Intel stock coolers are garbage, and AMD tends to run hot. I had the same issue. 70 C is perfectly safe though. If you don't do overclocking you can buy a cheap aftermarket cooler like the evo 212 by coolermaster, proving you have a large enough tower.

Nope as long as it's below 80c it shouldn't really affect the life span. Im having an i7 3820 OC to 4.3ghz for 3 years now and it get to 70 - 80c degree in games like Gta5 and Witcher 3 and I don't have any issues with it. I could however buy a better cooling though but I will wait for my next upgrade probably in a few years.

My GPU is really outdated and it kept staying at 69° with this game (the heaviest one i have probably) so you're fine.
I must admit though that i'm really scared about overheating, 70° sounds like A LOT to me (i'm a noob when it comes to PC configurations) but apparently it's normal.

this, had to switch motherboards once on my amd system because i ran it for a few hours at 70 °C, damaged some parts.

By outdated are you refering to a 500, or 600 series NVIDIA or AMD equivelent? If so then they are designed to be safe up to 90 C. Most modern GPU's are desinged to run between 60-80 C with some running into high 80's C mostly AMD cards since they tend to run hotter then NVIDIA.

Buy a fairly decent small regular fan. Place it near your cpu pointed at it, turn it on. Never had a heat problem since. Although you will need to clean your heads and cpu fan more regularly (once a month id recommend.)
I know its not the most "professional" method. But i have been doing this for over a year now and my cpu never breaks 34 degrees celcius during gameplay at max settings... without it....well...KABOOM! (seriously tho i get CPU overheat problems and forced shutdowns without it...my rig is a tiny 10inch wide by 13 inches long and about 9 inches tall black box with alot of hardware in it, water cooled 16g ram etc)
