Definately agree with this. They could make it so much better if they had balanced it out. That way it actually mattered what potion/dedoction you would pick in certain fights. Right now it really doesn't even matter, you will win the fight regardless and you are overburdend with items.
And, of course, play with that on "blood and broken bones" as the most easy setting...

Cool, maybe I should rush the storyline then. You should definately look into Gwent, awesome mini game!
I also read the developers will invest in the witcher next year too so maybe they will add some rebalancing/gameplay changes in the future!

As for Gwent, I am experiencing a similar difficulty drop off as the main game. I just reached level 18 and I already earned the gwent master achievement.
