Couldn't beat Olgierd von Everec...
So, I just got through the main game, which was really enjoyable. I just started the Blood and Stone expansion. The decisions I made forced me to fight Olgierd. To make a long story short, I couldn't beat him--even on easy. And I'm level 35, with superior feline everything. This should have been an easy fight. Needless to say, I reloaded my last save and avoided the fight.

Should I be using a controller to make this easier? In vanilla, the keyboard was fine, but it seems much deeper strats are needed in the expansion. I feel guilty for not spending more time trying, but it was so one-sided I figured what's the point?

I think you should be able to beat him with the right strategy. I know I was probably lvl 35 or so when I beat him on normal difficulty. I kept up a passive Quen and dodged out of his speedy attacks, but dodged toward him so I could knock a few quick attacks on his back for extra damage. I think I just whittled him away like this.

Hope that helps a bit. Good luck!

Basically just fight him off and dodge spam until he gets tired, then smack him about, also counter attack if you can time it right. Only sign to use is Quen here, its basically all about surviving until he gets tired.

As for beating him, I have no idea why you're having such a hard time with him. He's not that hard to beat.

Sorry, that's what I meant to say--Hearts of Stone.

That's the problem then. The dodge key on the keyboard is defaulted to ALT which is a hard key to get to when fighting. I always end up rolling. I may have to switch to my PS3 controller. It may be easier.

Well, Dodging or Rolling, either works in my opinion, though with dodging you can get the odd flank attack in which bypasses his defense, also worth noting, improved heavy attacks are quite frankly overpowered against bosses. (Killed Eredin in 6-7 hits with those ^_^ ) (The Buff which ignores guards is what I refer to primarily with heavy attacks)

Just change your keybindings. It's not that hard!!
I binded my dodge to Ctrl and never had problems using it.

Counter attack and Yrden is your friend.

I know I'm a little late to the party (two years too late), but If you lock on to Olgierd in the fight, you can hit him when he's teleporting around. If you hit him when he's teleporting, he stops and there's this redish (maybe it's green; I'm colorblind so I could really care less) cloud of god knows what that starts floating around him and you can get three to four good hits in while he's out. Rinse and repeat that, and you should be good--no upgraded signs or combat necessary. I play without spending any sort of perk points (yes, crazy, I know), and I was able to beat him on normal after I started exploiting him like this.

I came here looking for some help. I was playing him on first time, on Blood and Broken Bones. He seemed too hard, I tried all the signs, not effective at all. Then just rolled around and try to get few shots in, thinking he cannot be this hard. Here's the REAL TRICK. Counterattack him, when he does his powerful leap attack. He will turn RED and you get about 3 free strong attacks on him. If you mistime, roll away and try again. First half or health bar 10+ minutes, second half, about 2-3minutes.

I gotta say, he wiped the floor with me the first 3 tries. it was so new and thrilling though after relatively easy cruising on Death March. As others said, counters are the only way to beat him. Respec into sword combat mutations, gear yourself up and drink all the decortions that will boost pure damage output - despite my normal attacks usually dealing 2k damage this guy only ate ~300. And after that, roll away from him and fish for the strong red attack. After he's stunned you can do rend (powerful strong attack) and whirl at him until he starts autoblocking. Roll away and repeat. Don't bother engaging in close combat with him unless you just want to have a good time like me - you'll only manage to land 1 attack after parrying his normal attacks and the fight will take you like 20 minutes.

Lol last boss fight took me 3 days and 5-6 hours on deathmarch

playing on NG+ at level 80something on Normal, Olgierd breaks through my guard taking 1/2 my health proceeds to kill me in the next landed hit. After a little research there appears to be a bug that really over powers him if you have upscaling turned on. so I might see if I can switch it off and try again later.

People need to stop saying crap like "it was easy" and "its not that hard".
Some People have different playing styles, some of the fights were easy for me and some were horribly hard.
don't be a troll.

Even Olgierd himself disapproves of this level of necromancy.

I can confirm, there's a upscaling bug on Olgierd, nearly impossible to kill him (or would take an hour or so) just turned off the upscaling and beat him in like 3 minutes.

SO YES, TURN UPSCALING OFF ON OLGIERD.
