Hitting Q will activate the first mode for Quen, which will block damage.

Holding down Q will call up the second sign mode, which will not only block damage but also absorb some of that as health for Geralt.

But do I have to hold Q continuously to keep the shield in effect? I hold down Q, the bubble appears around me; but when I let Q go, the bubble dissappears. I dont think I have any shield at that point.

yes it works like that. It is only active as long as you hold down the button. :Geralt:

Oh I actually did not know it was a channeled ability. Was wondering why there was no buff tracker to tell me when the shield expired.
Good tip! :P

Isnt that ridiulous? You have to hold Q while hitting WASD and spaebar?

When you just hit q once you will get the first mode of quen. It will block the next attack and you don't have to hold q for it to happen. If you look closely you will see a small orange ''bolt'' flying around you.
When you hold q and have a special talent there will be a bubble around you that will block all incoming damage and return some to you as healing.

Like I said...

Holding down Q will call up the second sign mode, which will not only block damage but also absorb some of that as health for Geralt.

I understand, its just clumsy to hold Q continuously while maneuvering with the WASD keys.

When Quen Shield (Alternate bubble mode) is active you can hardly move anyway. It's meant to stand there and absorb hits.

Good example.

Its not exactly a shield, but rather a means of healing. At least thats how I used it. Dont want to waste any healing items? Just activate the shield and let an enemy attack you once, then roll away. Two-three times will give you full hp.

That's not my video, I just pulled it from youtube to show you an example. Again when the alternate skill is maxed out any hits you absorb regenerate vitality.
