How to Play physical CD version on steam?

I got the Physical Witcher 3 CD for my birthday , i chose this over the steam one as it came with a map and it's just nice to have something physical with such a good game.
however when i try to add it to the steam library it isn't recognized as a steam game?
And what the hell is this GOG stuff? How do i get it onto steam :(

To get the game on steam you have to buy it on steam. Other resources get GOG key, drm-free service made by CD Projekt. It has optional steam-like client though, with achievements and stuff.

no you can bind a game to steam with " games -> activate a product on steam" on the upper left.
Then you must type in your game key there.

You can't activate it on Steam if you have a physical copy. It's either install from DVD or activate and download from GOG. Only with expansion Hearts of Stone (and upcoming Blood and Wine) you can choose where to activate it based on where you have base game bought.

you can try activating the CD key trough steam, BUT if its a GoG version of the game, then youre pretty much not able to activate it on steam.

always check that the version youre buying physically has the steam logo behind the cover of the game.

The only way to get a Steam version of this game is to buy the game from Steam. The physical version of the game is GoG version.

So find the Activaton key, head on over to gog.com, setup an account, and activate the game on there. You can download GoG Galaxy if you want time tracking, auto updating, achievements.

By the way whoever said that steam is a DRM, this game doesnt have one. it uses steam only for achievements and client side download and overlay, nothing else. there isnt even Valve DRM related to it.

I had to make room on my SSD and i moved the whole game to my other harddrive. i can start the game trough exe whenever i want. Same with the GOG version of the game.
