Wraith won't die?
After the Gryphon fight I started to ride down the path where I came across a church. Got off the horse, a wraith spawned. I did the right thing by plopping down the magic circle and wailing at it, but it stayed at zero hit points effectively being stunlocked as I kept whacking it.

Circle faded, I backed away and it teleported around. When it was close, I plopped the circle down and hit it, still didn't die. I then tried Ignis and it still didn't die.

What am I doing wrong?

Not anything really. This is the wraith close to the place of power right? If this is the case, what you are explaining has happened to me a lot of times as well. Usually this happens when I try to fight this wraith early in the game. What I do is to progress a little further in the story until I reach Velen. Then I come back and the problem is fixed and I can kill the wraith. Try it. See if it works for you as well.

...So basically, it's a part of the game with incredibly poor planning?

I don't know if it's a bug or poor planning or what, But it has happened to me on more playthroughs than I can count. On some playthoughs it's fine though, I can kill the wraith early. But sometimes It becomes literally undying.

Did you go down the stairs? It's impossible to kill that wraith aboveground; at some point it teleports down and you have to follow it.

It's possible to kill it at level 1, so it's not a matter of progressing in the game.

This is true, Although when this happens the wraith will never teleport to some other place. It just takes as much damage as you can deal, And it continues to keep fighting forever.

I can confirm that, it never teleported away. Just proceeded to murder me after I dealt enough damage to kill it like thrice over.

Not true. The wraith is just bugged and glitchy. You don't need any story progression here.

THIS. The wraith glitches like hell, gets stuck, despawn, does all kinds of retarded things - but at the end of a day, if you _slowly_ descend the stairs, it will follow you, and you'll be able to kill it in the catacombs.

You don't want it to _teleport_. Just lead it into the catacombs, that's it.

Precisely and unfortunately, yes.
