When I get to where I can, I get the Wolf armor, it's my favorite. Lately I have been using the Cat gear, I like it too.

You buy the maps from dealers. Any paper in his inventory with a yellow exclamation point by it is usually an armor map. These open up the treasure hunts for the armor schematics.

Good timing. I've been trying to complete the sets of the wolven armor... thanks!

I prefer cat armor. it is light, looks stylish, and the Grandmaster Bonuses are decent.

I play on max difficulty. My playstyle revolves around quen, igni, and evading attacks.

Depends on your play style, as light, medium, and heavy armor offer different fighting styles.

Ultimately it is this different varieties of Witcher armor that are the best in my opinion. Other armor also performs well, but mostly just offers different looks for Geralt.

I liked cat armor. Wolf armor was also really good too when upgraded.
It's been a while since I played the game so my armor names may not be right.
You have to look at the armor that fits your play style. Heavy armor like the Bear armor is slow but good defense. Your moves won't trigger as fast.
Cat armor: your moves are fast but it's light armor so you'll take more damage. You need to stay moving.
Wolf armor is a balance between heavy and cat. Decent for using signs as well if I remember right.
Can't remember the others though.

It all depends on what kind of playstyle you want. By FAR, the best armor is whatever Witcher School armor is open to you, but each of these different armors favors a different playstyle. If you want fast and agile, hit-and-run with lots of kiting and emphasis on avoiding damage via dodging attacks, then you want the Feline armor. If you prefer tanking, then it's Bear. Griffon School is for lots of Sign usage, and the Wolf School, which requires a free DLC, is a jack-of-all-trades style armor.

You won't be able to get any of these armors as loot or from merchants; instead, different merchants will sell treasure maps that will lead to diagrams for these armor pieces. Reading a map will give you a quest to get a diagram. Once you get the diagrams, you'll have to have an armor craft them. The armorer needs to be at least at "Journeyman" skill level.

Go to the armour and weapon smith in each city/town and check out their inventory. Some of them will have maps that lead you to the various Witcher armour sets. As others have said they are by FAR the best in the game. I generally used whatever one I thought looked coolest, which changed as I upgraded them throughout the game.

They each specialize in certain stats but it was all about looks for me, they're the best looking armour in the game imo and they each change in appearance as you upgrade them, generally looking more badass with each upgrade.

There's several different styles - Feline, Ursine, Griffin, Wolf, Viper and Manticore, and it's worth finding and upgrading each for their visual appeal alone imo.
